ECLSS Engineer - Air Revitalization System in GERMANY

Visa sponsorship & Relocation 1 year ago
Here at The Exploration Company, we are developing, producing, and operating Nyx, a modular and reusable space orbital vehicle that can eventually be refuelled in orbit and that can carry cargo - and potentially humans in the longer run.

We are seeking a talented and versatile engineer to join our team and contribute to the development of our Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS). In this role, you will play a crucial part in designing, analyzing, and overseeing the procurement, manufacturing, verification, and operation of the Air Revitalization System (ARS), a key subsystem within ECLSS. While direct experience with ARS or ECLSS is beneficial, it is not a requirement—we value your strong technical background and are ready to provide the specialized training needed to excel in this role.

You will also have the unique opportunity to influence the entire design process, from initial concept through software architecture, system integration, testing, and final validation of critical components and assemblies.

Key Responsibilities

In your capacity as an ECLSS Engineer, your role will be continuously evolving, but day to day your duties will include:

  • Lead the Development: Drive the design, development, and procurement of ECLSS ARS components and assemblies from the initial concept through manufacturing, testing, and operational phases.
  • Component-Level Design: Perform design trades and assist with selecting components, ensuring alignment with system requirements.
  • Technical Requirements: Draft and manage technical requirements to ensure they meet overall system objectives and design standards.
  • End-to-End Design Influence: Shape the architecture and design of the ECLSS, including software and hardware, to ensure cohesive system functionality.
  • Supplier Collaboration: Act as the technical liaison with suppliers, overseeing the procurement, development, verification, and validation of components.
  • Subsystem Analysis: Support subsystem-level analyses to evaluate the performance and reliability of ARS components and assemblies.
  • Verification and Validation: Lead the verification and validation efforts for ARS components, including qualification, development, and proto-flight testing.
  • Cross-Functional Collaboration: Work closely with AIT (Assembly, Integration, and Test) and cross-functional teams to ensure smooth integration and validation of ECLSS components.
  • Documentation: Create and maintain detailed engineering documentation, including test plans, reports, and specifications.
  • Design Reviews: Participate in design reviews, providing technical feedback to suppliers and customers.
  • Mission Operations Support: Assist in defining subsystem-related procedures and operational constraints for mission operations.

What We Would Love to See From You

In the role of ECLSS Engineer ideally, you will have the following:

  • Educational Background: Advanced degree (Master of Science or PhD) in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, or a related discipline.
  • Relevant Experience: 2-5 years of experience working on spacecraft systems or other relevant technologies.
  • Hands-On Expertise: Practical experience in the fabrication, assembly, and testing of hardware components is highly advantageous.
  • Design Process Proficiency: Experience in design processes, including concept development, trade studies, and optimization for manufacturability and reliability.
  • Technical Requirement Management: Proven ability to develop and manage technical requirements, ensuring they align with overall system objectives and mission goals.
  • Software Familiarity: Familiarity with tools like GitHub and Python is an asset.
  • Analytical and Design Tools: Basic understanding of CFD analyses and CAD design tools such as NX is an asset.
  • Fluidic Analysis Knowledge: Familiarity with 2D fluidic analysis tools, such as ecoSIM Pro, is a plus.

Skills and Behaviours

  • Language Skills: Fluency in English is required, with proficiency in French or German considered an asset.
  • Team Collaboration: Ability to work effectively with cross-functional teams, suppliers, and stakeholders to ensure successful project execution.
  • Communication: Strong oral and written communication skills, with the ability to clearly articulate technical concepts and requirements to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Problem-Solving: A proactive approach to problem-solving, with the ability to adapt to new challenges and drive solutions under tight timelines.
  • Organizational Skills: Strong organizational skills to manage multiple tasks and priorities effectively, with a positive and flexible attitude to getting the job done.
  • Leadership Alignment: Demonstrates behaviors consistent with The Exploration Company’s core values of Mission, Vision, Integrity, Excellence, and Teamwork.
  • Passion for Space: A genuine passion for space exploration and a commitment to advancing the European space industry.
  • Industry Enthusiasm: A true space enthusiast, ready to contribute to transformative change in the European space industry.
