That growth means we're constantly hiring, onboarding, and supporting people across multiple states and employment types. We're building an internal HR foundation to match our pace, and we're looking for a motivated HR Generalist to be a core part of that team.


ABOUT THE ROLE

We're hiring an HR Generalist to support day-to-day HR operations alongside our Employee Success Manager and fractional HR leadership. This is a hands-on role built for someone who loves process, people, and compliance โ€” and who wants to grow into owning the HR function over time.

You'll be supporting a remote, multi-state US workforce of W-2 employees and 1099 contractors, working across tools like Gusto, Deel, and Google Drive to keep HR running smoothly.


WHAT YOU'LL DO

1.ย  Onboarding & Offboarding

  • Own end-to-end onboarding for new US W-2 hires: offer letters, background checks via Checkr, I-9s, state new hire reporting, and policy acknowledgments.
  • Set up new hires in Gusto (W-2 employees) and Deel (international/1099 contractors) and coordinate system access with IT.
  • Conduct new hire orientation sessions and ensure all required training is assigned in Trainual.
  • Run clean, compliant offboarding: final pay coordination (including state-specific timing rules), access removal, separation documentation, and exit interviews.
  • Maintain onboarding and offboarding checklists by role and classification; flag gaps and suggest improvements.


2.ย  Benefits Administration

  • Serve as a key resource for employees during open enrollment and qualifying life events.
  • Support benefits education and enrollment using Employee Navigator, working closely with our benefits broker (Aston Sharp).
  • Track and process leave requests, time-off entries, and basic leave-of-absence coordination in Gusto.
  • Answer employee questions about health, dental, vision, 401(k), and other benefits with accuracy and care.


3.ย  HR Operations & Compliance

  • Maintain accurate employee records in Gusto, Deel, and Google Drive (personnel folders per employee).
  • Assist with multi-state compliance: state registrations, required notices, posting requirements, and onboarding-related state rules.
  • Support workers' comp setup and management for new hires.
  • Assist in updating the Employee Handbook and HR policies; track acknowledgments and version history.
  • Help maintain the HR audit tracker โ€” updating statuses, flagging open items, and surfacing risks for HR leadership review.


4.ย  Employee Relations Support

  • Be a first point of contact for employee questions related to HR policies, leave, benefits, and day-to-day issues.
  • Log and track employee relations issues; escalate appropriately to HR leadership or legal when needed.
  • Assist managers with performance documentation, PIPs, and separation paperwork.


5.ย  Systems & Documentation

  • Keep Gusto and Deel updated in real time: new hires, changes, terminations, and compliance docs.
  • Centralize HR documentation in Google Drive โ€” ensuring all personnel folders are current and organized.
  • Support the build-out of HR SOPs, checklists, and templates as TCC formalizes its HR function.
  • Help create Loom walkthroughs or written guides for key HR processes (onboarding, offboarding, state-specific steps, etc.).



MUST-HAVE EXPERIENCE

  • 3โ€“5+ years of hands-on HR generalist or HR coordinator experience, ideally in a startup or small business environment.
  • Direct, working experience with Gusto โ€” including setting up new hires, processing changes, managing PTO, and navigating payroll inputs.
  • Direct, working experience with Deel โ€” including contractor onboarding, profile management, and payment coordination.
  • Experience owning or co-owning new hire onboarding and orientation โ€” not just supporting it.
  • Hands-on benefits administration experience: open enrollment, employee questions, carrier coordination, and enrollment tracking.
  • Familiarity with multi-state US HR requirements, including state new hire reporting, onboarding notices, and basic wage/hour rules.
  • Experience supporting California employees is required; experience with Colorado, Illinois, Maryland, or Pennsylvania is a plus.
  • Strong attention to detail and comfort maintaining organized HR records and personnel files.
  • Clear, direct written and verbal communication โ€” comfortable responding to employees and escalating issues with appropriate context.


NICE-TO-HAVE EXPERIENCE

  • Experience in a fully remote, distributed company with both W-2 employees and 1099 contractors.
  • Familiarity with Trainual (or similar LMS) for assigning and tracking onboarding training.
  • Familiarity with Checkr or other background check platforms.
  • Exposure to HR compliance tools like Mineral or Mosey for multi-state law tracking.
  • Experience building or improving HR SOPs, checklists, or process documentation from scratch.
  • Prior use of AI tools (ChatGPT, Claude, Perplexity) to research HR questions, draft policies, or sanity-check compliance items.
  • Background in services, staffing, agency, or call-center-style environments with a mix of hourly and salaried workers.

This role is intentionally designed as a stepping stone to HR Manager. As TCC formalizes its HR infrastructure โ€” completing the HR audit, building out the HR playbook, and scaling the team โ€” the right person will have a clear path to take on expanded ownership, including multi-state compliance, employee relations, and HR systems administration.
