Senior Backend Software Engineer

About the opportunity

This organisation is developing next-generation financial infrastructure that combines traditional payment technology with digital asset capabilities to improve global money movement. The engineering team is focused on building resilient, scalable platforms that support commercial card programmes, payment workflows and developer-facing APIs used by customers around the world.

The role

As a Senior Backend Software Engineer, you will play a key role in designing, developing and operating backend services that support card transactions, fraud prevention, card lifecycle management and partner integrations. Working closely with Product, Risk, Finance, Compliance and Engineering teams, you will contribute to architectural decisions while helping build reliable, secure and maintainable financial systems.

• Design and develop backend services for payment processing, card transactions and programme management
• Contribute to architecture and technical decisions with a focus on scalability, resilience and maintainability

• Build robust, observable and well-tested services within a service-oriented architecture
• Collaborate with cross-functional stakeholders to deliver compliant and reliable financial products
• Participate in code reviews, incident response and continuous platform improvements
• Help evolve engineering standards, tooling and system design as the platform scales

Essential requirements

• Proven ability to design, build and maintain production-grade backend systems
• Strong experience developing backend services using a typed language such as TypeScript, Java or Go
• Solid understanding of distributed systems, including asynchronous processing, retries, observability and eventual consistency
• Strong technical judgement with the ability to balance correctness, performance and long-term maintainability
• Experience working effectively within cross-functional product and engineering teams

Nice-to-haves

• Experience working with card payment systems, 3DS, PCI, tokenisation or chargeback platforms
• Experience building systems within regulated or compliance-driven environments
• Familiarity with TypeScript, Node.js, NestJS and AWS
• Experience developing platforms that expose external APIs or support partner integrations

Location and remote setup

Fully remote within the United Kingdom, Ireland, Poland or the Czech Republic. This role sits within the Engineering team and supports a globally distributed organisation.
