Junior Backend Developer

About the Role

We are looking for a detail-oriented Junior Backend Developer with strong core fundamentals in JavaScript / Node.js to help build and maintain the backend systems powering our data annotation, labeling, and AI model training workflows.

In this role, you will work closely with senior engineers, product managers, and data operations teams to develop APIs, manage datasets, and optimize the tools that enable high-quality training data delivery for advanced AI models.

Key Responsibilities

• Annotation Tooling & APIs: Assist in building and maintaining RESTful APIs and backend services that power custom data labeling tools and annotation interfaces.
• Dataset & Pipeline Management: Build backend workflows to ingest, format, process, and validate large datasets (text, image, audio, or structured data) before and after annotation.
• Database & Storage Integration: Write and optimize database queries to efficiently store, query, and serve annotation metadata using SQL (e.g., PostgreSQL) or NoSQL (e.g., MongoDB) databases.
• Quality & Validation Checks: Implement backend validation scripts and automated quality checks to detect labeling errors, track annotator throughput, and verify data accuracy.

• Debugging & System Support: Help troubleshoot API issues, resolve dataset export/import errors, and ensure high system uptime for remote annotation teams.

Required Qualifications & Skills

• Education / Experience: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related quantitative field (or equivalent practical experience/bootcamp completion with a strong project portfolio).
• Core Technical Skills:
• Solid understanding of JavaScript (ES6+) and Node.js.
• Familiarity with building and consuming RESTful APIs and working with JSON data formats.
• Experience with database management (PostgreSQL, MySQL, or MongoDB) for dataset handling and query optimization.

• Proficiency with version control using Git and GitHub/GitLab.
• Data Handling Skills: Practical experience parsing, cleaning, and transforming structured and unstructured data using Node.js scripts or backend utilities.
• Work Authorization: Must be legally authorized to work in the United States.

Nice-to-Haves

• Familiarity with TypeScript.
• Basic understanding of AI/ML workflows, RLHF (Reinforcement Learning from Human Feedback), or data labeling platforms (e.g., Label Studio, CVAT, or custom internal annotation tools).
