Job Summary
Overall Purpose
The Senior Database Administrator will design, implement, and manage complex database environments - on-premise and cloud-based. This role ensures the high availability, security, and performance of database systems while leading strategic database initiatives and mentoring junior staff.
Key Responsibilities
The job holder will be responsible for:
- Architecting, implementing, and managing high-performance, scalable database solutions across on-premises, cloud, and hybrid environments to support enterprise-grade applications and services.
- Monitoring database performance, identifying bottlenecks, and applying advanced tuning techniques to ensure optimal system responsiveness and reliability.
- Planning and executing database migrations, upgrades, and integrations, ensuring minimal disruption and full data integrity throughout the process.
- Developing and enforcing robust database security protocols, including auditing, encryption, access control, and compliance with regulatory standards such as GDPR and DORA.
- Designing and implementing comprehensive backup and disaster recovery strategies, aligned with business continuity and cyber resilience objectives.
- Handling and maintaining database-related projects, including capacity planning, system optimisation, and infrastructure modernisation initiatives.
- Collaborating with development teams to design and optimise database schemas, queries, and indexing strategies that support agile delivery and DevOps practices.
- Conducting root cause analysis for database-related incidents, implement corrective actions, and drive continuous improvement to reduce recurrence.
- Automating repetitive database management tasks using scripting languages (e.g. PowerShell, Python) and orchestration tools to improve operational efficiency.
- Mentoring and training junior team members, fostering a culture of knowledge sharing, technical excellence, and continuous learning.
- Ensuring regulatory and audit readiness, maintaining accurate documentation, audit trails, and change control processes.
- Participating in governance and strategic planning forums, contributing to IT architecture decisions, project prioritisation, and resource alignment.
- Contributing to cyber resilience and stress testing exercises, validating recovery procedures and supporting enterprise risk mitigation efforts.
- Championing innovation and continuous improvement, evaluating emerging database technologies and proposing enhancements to existing systems and practices.

This position requires the readiness to work in a 24/7 operational environment, including on-call responsibilities on a roster basis with rest of the team.
In addition to the specific functions, management may assign more duties as required for the job from time to time.

Required Criteria:
Previous proven work experience of five (5) years in an Enterprise IT Environment, with a strong focus on Database Administration AND an MQF Level 6 Qualification in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related area.

Previous proven work experience of seven (7) years in an Enterprise IT Environment, with a strong focus on Database Administration.
OR
Previous proven work experience of three (3) years in an Enterprise IT Environment, with a strong focus on Database Administration AND an MQF Level 6 Bachelor’s Degree in Computer Science, Information Technology or a related area.
