Security Specialist 3 ($94,500 - $154,600)
Associate Laboratory Directorate Defense Protection - Security Integration Office (ALDDP-INT) is seeking a motivated security professional to facilitate secure mission work for the Deputy Directorate of Operations and Deputy Directorate of Science, Technology and Engineering.
You will be instrumental in helping to protect LANL's people, information and property and provide security support for a variety of research and experimental programs and projects. As an independently positioned security advisor matrixed to a single Associate Laboratory Directorate, you will be relied upon for broad security program guidance and resourcing policy or other support as required.
As a Deployed Security Professional (DSP) you will need to have high attention to detail, maintain a positive, customer-focused attitude, and ensure all LANL and federal security requirements are met while optimizing efficiency and success for the important work being accomplished.
More importantly, you must be able to demonstrate and promote self-responsibility and accountability for safety, security, quality and environmental standards in all operations. The DSP is an advisor and reports to the Security Integration Office, Security Program Leader (Security Manager 3).
The successful candidate will:
- Develop and maintain a complete understanding of security requirements and procedures
- Assist in the development and implementation of security plans as required for organizational program(s)
- Work closely with assigned organization(s) to facilitate success while ensuring adherence to all applicable security policies and procedures
- Perform security reviews of LANL work areas and coordinate corrective actions when needed
- Create and deliver presentations and other material for awareness of security topics and issues
- Influence LANL's culture while deployed as a professional role model for security
- Network within and outside the organization to facilitate processes and procedures, and resolve problems as they arise
- Perform as security point of contact between the organization and LANL's security institution
- Brief organizations and their management teams on the security posture and any emergent security challenges and proposed remedial action
- Work with LANL's Security Incident Team to perform incident response and mitigation
What You Need
Minimum Job Requirements:
- Knowledge and experience in one or more of the major security disciplines: classified matter protection and control; information security; physical security; and personnel security
- Ability in writing and implementing procedures, policies, guides or other formal documents for compliance by employees, sub-contractors and visitors
- Experience interfacing with management, technical personnel and external stakeholders
- Demonstrated experience in the preparation and presentation of reports and briefings to supervisory and external audiences
- Skill in conducting research and designing corrective actions for issues management
- Experience in problem solving and contributing to process improvement efforts
- Demonstrated intangible character traits of initiative, teamwork, interpersonal skills, independent judgement, professionalism and tact
Education and Experience: Position requires a bachelor's degree and 6 years of experience; or, an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.
Desired Qualifications:
- Knowledge and experience with security assessment and risk management processes
- Experience in sensitive facility and/or sensitive information operations
- Understanding of Department of Energy security policies, practices and procedures
- Active DOE Q security clearance
- Advanced knowledge of LANL's organization, mission and operations
- Demonstrated skill in supporting executive leadership and/or robust customer relationships
Work Environment: Work schedules are at the discretion of management, expected to be weekdays (5/8s, 9/80s or 4/10s).
Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.
Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details
Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.
Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.
- Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.
New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.
Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
