What You Will Do

The Special Security Operations IT & Cyber Group (SSO-3) is seeking a skilled and motivated Linux systems engineer to join our Linux Services Team. This team designs, deploys, and maintains advanced Linux environments across multiple TS/SCI networks, supporting secure and mission-critical computing for national security programs.

In this role, you will collaborate closely with the cybersecurity team to ensure compliance with all technical requirements. You will perform advanced systems administration of Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 servers and workstations, configuring, deploying, and maintaining compliant enterprise Linux systems. Providing mentoring and technical guidance to less experienced staff is also a key part of this position, as is offering operational support to customers using standard procedures.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in Red Hat Enterprise Linux, automation tools, and version control systems and will play a key role in developing scalable, secure solutions that enable the Laboratory's scientific and national security missions.

As a member of the Linux Services Team, your responsibilities will include:

  • Support system patching and lifecycle management through Red Hat Satellite and local repositories
  • Develop and maintain automation workflows using Ansible Automation Platform and GitLab
  • Develop, document, and maintain baseline configurations and standard operating procedures
  • Deploy and manage GPU-enabled systems (e.g., NVIDIA DGX, HGX, CUDA, containerized AI workloads) to support AI and data-intensive environments
  • Support enterprise storage systems (NFS, NAS, NetApp) to ensure data availability and integrity
  • Participate in requirements gathering, capacity planning, and infrastructure modernization efforts
  • Work independently and in teams on diverse, challenging IT-related projects

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

  • Strong understanding of system security, access control, compliance frameworks, and risk management
  • Extensive hands-on experience administering RHEL or similar Linux systems in enterprise environments
  • Strong expertise with automation and configuration management tools (Ansible, Bash)
  • Experience with GitLab or similar version control and CI/CD platforms
  • Experience with Red Hat Satellite, configuration management, and patch automation
  • Working knowledge of government hybrid cloud platforms such as OpenShift, AWS GovCloud, Azure Government, or DoD-accredited cloud environments
  • Excellent communication and documentation skills
  • Strong collaborative team and customer service mindset

Education/Experience:

Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a technical field and a minimum of 5 years' related experience, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. At this level post graduate work may be expected.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Experience building systems to comply with NIST 800-53, CIS, DoD STIG standards
  • Experience with GPU-based computing environments, including NVIDIA DGX and HGX systems, CUDA, and familiarity with containerized and orchestration technologies such as Podman and Kubernetes
  • Experience managing Linux systems integrated with Microsoft Active Directory, including authentication
  • Experience troubleshooting Linux network connectivity and performance issues
  • Experience managing enterprise storage systems (NFS, NAS, SAN, NetApp, or equivalent)
  • Active DOE Q or DoD TS/SCI clearance

Training and Certifications:

  • Red Hat Certified System Administrator (RHCSA) required or ability to obtain within 12 months
  • Red Hat Certified Engineer (RHCE)

Work Environment:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position in order to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Please note that this requirement applies only to citizens of the United States. Foreign nationals are subject to a similar requirement under DOE Order 142.3A.

Clearance: Q or Q/SCI (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.

Regular position: Term status Laboratory employees applying for regular-status positions are converted to regular status.

Internal Applicants: Regular appointment employees who have served the required period of continuous service in their current position are eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory.
