Description
SAIC is seeking a
Tropical Meteorology Research Scientist to join their team at the US Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) Marine Meteorology Division (MMD) in Monterey, CA. This position is 100% remote.
The Tropical Meteorology Research Scientist will be responsible for but not limited to the following
- Maintain real-time runs of the COAMPS-TC ensemble on DSRC computing resources.
- Perform model development activities for the COAMPS-TC ensemble, including
- Improve the workflow of the COAMPS-TC ensemble.
- Update “base model” to incorporate v2025.deterministic COAMPS-TC configuration changes.
- Investigate new approaches to generating initial-time synoptic-scale and vortex-scale perturbations.
- Assist FNMOC in their maintenance of the operational COAMPS-TC ensemble, and in their adoption of transitioned updates to the COAMPS-TC ensemble.
- Assist with the development and maintenance of deterministic COAMPS-TC capabilities.
- Conduct COAMPS-TC ensemble and deterministic runs in support of an assessment regarding the risk of TC activity to U.S. military bases.
- Provide written material and figures for ONR program reviews and reports.
Qualifications
Required Education
- Bachelor's degree and zero (0) years’ experience; additional four (4) years’ experience can be considered in lieu of degree.
Required Clearance
- No security clearance needed; US Citizenship required.
- Must complete a T3 investigation prior to start to allow access to government facilities and IT systems.
Required Skills
- Must have at a minimum of 3 years of demonstrated experience in tropical mesoscale NWP modeling and scripting for the management of job submission and data processing tasks, including error handling; provide recommendations to team lead for resolution of research issues related to mesoscale modeling problems; parallel processing computing experience.
- Must have demonstrable report writing experience.
- Must have demonstrable data processing experience.
Desired Skills
- Experience with a combination of FORTRAN, Cylc, MATLAB, Python, or Shell Scripting programming languages.
- Experience publishing peer-reviewed scientific literature, software documentation, guidebooks, and/or handbooks.
- High Performance Computing (HPC) experience.
Target salary range $80,001 - $120,000. The estimate displayed represents the typical salary range for this position based on experience and other factors.
