Duration: 8, 12 or 16 months

Salary: $28 - $36/hour, dependent upon previous work-term experience

  • Enrolled in an engineering co-op (or internship) program at a recognized Canadian university.
  • Have Excellent computer skills and experience working with Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to communicate verbally and in writing clearly and concisely, using appropriate technical vocabulary.
  • Hold a valid Class 5 driver's license.

Distribution Design Engineering

Discipline: Electrical, Civil Engineering

Location: Grande Prairie, Edmonton, Lloydminster

Description:

  • Prepare designs using AutoCAD for projects compatible with pre-engineered standards, regulations, and meeting customer requirements.
  • Calculate structure loading & determine pole class and guy length requirements based on tangential and sheer loading & balancing of static forces.
  • Clearance calculations of overhead facilities
  • Size electrical equipment, wire, cable, and appropriate over-current protective devices
  • Develop project cost and resource estimates.
  • Prepare detailed material lists & ordering material.

Distribution System Planning

Discipline: Electrical Engineering

Location: Edmonton, Grande Prairie, Lloydminster

Description:

  • Operate power system simulation software (CYME) for load flow analysis.
  • Creation of Single Line Diagrams (SLDs) as needed for customer new extensions and system work.
  • Develops protection schemes, regulator settings, transformer sizes.
  • reviews historical load and generation data and assists in the implementation of recent technologies.
  • Work with Transmission Protection and Control group to revise 25kV breaker relay settings.
  • Daily support as needed to Service staff with transformer upgrades, fuse coordination, equipment upgrades and replacements, contingency studies, and outage investigations.

Substation Engineering – Protection and Control

Discipline: Electrical Engineering

Location: Edmonton

Description:

  • Assist with the preparation of transmission substation Protection & Control detailed design and settings work packages, including drafting, quality checks, and coordination to ensure package alignment and constructability.
  • Develop short-circuit, arc flash, and coordination studies by modelling substations in electrical design software, running simulations, and assessing the impacts of fault scenarios.
  • Support the operations and maintenance of Protection & Control assets by assisting with outage analysis, technical support, and Alberta Reliability Standards compliance activities.

Substation Engineering – Substation Design and Layout

Discipline: Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering

Location: Edmonton

Description:

  • Yard and equipment layout design for small capital maintenance projects such as fence repairs and switch replacement.
  • Model and run grounding studies to verify that step and touch potential within substation is kept within safe limits for individuals working on site.
  • Support the team in centralizing project and facility documentation into ProjectWise.

Electrical Transmission Lines & Civil Engineering

Discipline: Electrical, Civil, Computer Engineering

Location: Calgary, Edmonton

Description:

  • Assist engineers for overall engineering and design of overhead transmission line.
  • Prepare drawings and design for a wide range of projects and standards including new electrical transmission line builds.
  • Assist engineers with supporting asset management team, field maintenance crews, and right of way planning team.

Renewables & Microgrids

Discipline: Electrical Engineering

Location: Edmonton, Calgary

Description:

  • Prepare designs and drawings with MicroStation for projects compatible with pre-engineered standards, regulations, and customer requirements.
  • Provide engineering and project management support of renewables, battery systems and microgrids including design, procurement, implementation, and life cycle support.
  • Assist in planning, design, site visit, vendor outreach of electric vehicle related projects, such as public facing EV charging, ATCO internal charging.
  • Markup preliminary and as-built drawing packages as required. Coordinate drawing packages with Electrical & Instrumentation, and other Engineering teams.
  • Update weekly project list for budgeting, forecasting, and cost tracking.

Automation and SCADA

Discipline: Electrical, Computer, Communication Engineering

Location: Edmonton

Description:

  • Assist with the design and specifications of substation automation systems including processor-based hardware and software control systems (Relay, RTU – Remote Terminal Unit, HMI – Human Machine Interface).
  • Participation in substation design reviews.
  • Creating and reviewing procedures for Automation and SCADA material.
  • Independently works on small projects and applying standards and processes while recommending any deviation from standards to the supervisor.

Network Connectivity

Discipline: Electrical, Engineering Physics, Mechanical

Location: Edmonton

Description:

  • Entry level network modelling/facility mapping in the Hexagon G/Technology suite of applications.
  • Troubleshoot and address issues within the electrically connected model in G/Technology.
  • Participate in data integrity and cleanup projects that involve research, analysis, problem solving, and the reconciliation of data from various sources to resolve issues with the existing Utility Network Model data.
  • Develop documentation for both existing and new work processes.
  • Run daily validation tools as part of group QA/QC processes.

AMI Program

Discipline: Electrical

Location: Edmonton

Description:

  • Assist AMI team on deploying AMI meters, including AMI network design,process documentation, data management, data clean-up,
  • Analyze GIS data for existing AMI installation and determine / develop AMI meter procurement plan for future years.
  • Assist in communication with internal and external stakeholders, such as Rural Electricity Association, about AMI implementation.

Work Management

Discipline: Electrical, Civil Engineering

Location: Grande Prairie

Description:

  • This position is responsible for supporting the Work Management team as they interact with the project and technical groups to stabilize the Work and Asset Management Program. This role will provide exposure and allow direct interactions with the Transmission and Distribution operation teams. Activities such as data entry and analysis, retrieving requested information, compiling documentation, process development monitoring and updating are some of the key aspects of this position. In addition to these activities this role will support and possibly represent work management in collaboration efforts with other program such as Grid Modernization and the Customer Experience.

Execution Planning and Estimating

Discipline: Electrical Engineering

Location: Edmonton

Description:

  • Creating order of magnitude estimates for project scopes to support the General Tariff Application that is filed to the Alberta Utilities Commission (to receive approval to complete the defined work)
  • Creating order of magnitude estimates for project scopes pertaining to Large Distribution projects.
  • Determine constructability of Engineering designs and develop a scope of work for the execution portion of the project.
  • Updating templates the team uses to support their day-to-day work.
