Senior Virtualization Systems Administrator (VMware, Citrix & Proxmox)

Job Title: Virtualization Systems Administrator (VMware, Citrix & Proxmox)

Location: Remote

Duration: Full-time

Schedule: 40hrs/week (EST), with participation in shifting and on-call rotations for incidents and outages needs

Rate: $12/hr 

Our client is seeking an experienced Virtualization Systems Administrator with strong expertise in VMware, Citrix, and Proxmox environments. The primary focus of this role is the administration, optimization, troubleshooting, security, and expansion of the company's virtual infrastructure and virtual desktop environments.

The ideal candidate will serve as the subject matter expert for virtualization technologies, ensuring high availability, performance, scalability, and security across VMware, Citrix, and Proxmox platforms while supporting business-critical systems and applications.

VMware Administration

• Administer and maintain VMware vSphere, vCenter, and ESXi environments.
• Manage VMware clusters, resource pools, templates, snapshots, and virtual machine lifecycle operations.
• Configure and maintain VMware High Availability (HA), Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS), and vMotion.
• Monitor and optimize CPU, memory, storage, and network utilization across virtual infrastructure.
• Perform platform upgrades, patching, and lifecycle management.

Citrix Administration

• Administer and support Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops environments.
• Manage Citrix Delivery Controllers, StoreFront, and related Citrix infrastructure components.
• Troubleshoot and optimize virtual desktop and published application performance.
• Manage user access, Citrix policies, profiles, and session performance.
• Support end-user virtual desktop delivery and application publishing.

Proxmox Administration

• Administer and maintain Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) clusters.
• Deploy, manage, and optimize virtual machines and LXC containers.
• Configure cluster replication, high availability, backups, and disaster recovery solutions.
• Monitor and optimize Proxmox host performance and resource allocation.

• Perform migrations, upgrades, and platform maintenance.

Storage, Backup & Disaster Recovery

• Manage SAN, NAS, and shared storage environments supporting virtualization platforms.
• Configure and maintain backup and recovery solutions such as Veeam, Proxmox Backup Server, Nakivo, or similar technologies.
• Monitor backup success, perform recovery testing, and ensure disaster recovery readiness.
• Support data replication and business continuity initiatives.

Infrastructure Performance & Optimization

• Monitor infrastructure health, capacity, and performance across virtualization platforms.
• Analyze resource utilization and recommend improvements to maximize efficiency.
• Perform capacity planning and infrastructure scaling as business needs evolve.
• Troubleshoot performance bottlenecks involving compute, storage, networking, and virtualization layers.

Security & Compliance

• Implement virtualization security best practices and system hardening standards.
• Manage access controls, permissions, and platform security policies.
• Perform patch management, vulnerability remediation, and security updates.
• Support compliance and audit requirements as needed.

Monitoring & Incident Response

• Monitor virtualization environments and respond to alerts, incidents, and outages.
• Troubleshoot and resolve complex issues affecting virtual infrastructure and virtual desktops.
• Participate in on-call support and maintenance activities.
• Document incidents, root causes, and corrective actions.

Automation & Documentation

• Develop and maintain automation scripts using PowerShell, Bash, Python, or similar tools.

• Create and maintain technical documentation, diagrams, and standard operating procedures.

Additional Responsibilities

• Assist with virtualization platform upgrades, migrations, and infrastructure modernization projects.
• Support business continuity and disaster recovery initiatives.
• Collaborate with network, security, and support teams to resolve infrastructure issues.
• Perform other virtualization and infrastructure-related duties as assigned.

• 3+ years of hands-on experience administering VMware environments in a production environment.
• Experience with Citrix Virtual Apps and Desktops administration.
• Experience managing Proxmox Virtual Environment (VE) platforms.
• Strong experience with VMware vCenter, ESXi, HA, DRS, and vMotion.
• Experience with virtual machine provisioning, clustering, and resource optimization.
• Knowledge of SAN, NAS, shared storage, and backup technologies.
• Strong understanding of Windows Server administration and Active Directory.
• Solid networking knowledge including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and firewall concepts.
• Strong troubleshooting skills across virtualization, storage, and infrastructure layers.
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
• Ability to work independently in a fully remote environment.



• VMware Certified Professional (VCP), Citrix, Microsoft, Proxmox, or equivalent certifications.
• Experience with Veeam, Nakivo, Proxmox Backup Server, or similar backup platforms.
• Experience supporting enterprise virtual desktop infrastructure (VDI) environments.
• Experience with Dell PowerEdge, HP ProLiant, iDRAC, iLO, or similar server hardware.
• Experience with PowerShell, Python, or infrastructure automation.
• Experience working within MSP, enterprise, hosting, or service-provider environments.
