SATCOM Systems Engineer in NETHERLANDS

On behalf of ESA, we are looking for a Satellite Communication Systems Engineer to work at European Space Agency’s premises (ESTEC) in Noordwijk, The Netherlands.


About ESTEC

The European Space Research and Technology Centre (ESTEC) is the European Space Agency’s (ESA) base in Noordwijk, the Netherlands. As ESA’s largest test centre, it is responsible for the majority of space technology and spacecraft development through varying phases of production.


Tasks and activities

The scope of work will include:

  • Contributing to the preparation of invitation to tenders related to ESA R&D.
  • Being part of the activities and contracts technical follow-up.
  • Support internal hands-on technical analysis on subjects related to future SATCOM systems.
  • Advising the management of industrial R&D activities in the areas of:

-Satellite modem physical and link layer analysis, design, prototyping and testing.

-SATCOM Systems and network analysis and simulations.

  • Providing specific engineering support to space projects developed by ESA and/or by major European industries/operators.


Skills and experience

The following skills and experience are mandatory:

  • A Master’s degree in Telecommunication Engineering with particular emphasis on digital transmissions from the physical and MAC layer perspective.
  • Strong technical background in telecommunication engineering and knowledge of the relevant communication protocols.
  • Broad technical expertise in telecommunication networks design with particular emphasis on physical and link layer and good understanding of multiple access telecommunication protocols.
  • Knowledge of satellite communication architectures and techniques.
  • Experience in analysis and design of modern digital communication systems, coding and synchronization issues.
  • Good knowledge and experience in the use of communication simulation software tools (e.g. Matlab, C++) and commercial simulators (STK, OPNET, NS-3).


The following skills and experience would be highly desirable:

  • Knowledge of the main satellite and terrestrial telecom standards as well as the experience with communication system HW prototyping and testing (e.g. FPGA, DSP, GPU, micro-processors).
  • A few years of work experience in the field of complex digital communications systems, sub-systems and networks.
