Job Description
About the Role
FCast is an AI-powered business intelligence platform built for decision-makers in manufacturing, and industrials. We combine advanced forecasting, causal modeling, multiple AI capabilities and real-time data integration in a tightly integrated product suite that helps companies operate smarter and faster.
We’re looking for a Part-Time Data Engineer with a strong foundation in SQL, data modeling, and Linux systems to help design and maintain our on-premise data infrastructure. This role is ideal for someone who enjoys working close to the metal — optimizing databases, tuning queries, and managing data pipelines directly on physical servers rather than abstracted cloud environments.
You’ll be responsible for building robust data models, ensuring performance at scale, and maintaining high reliability across our data ecosystem.
Responsibilities
- Design, implement, and optimize data models for analytics and operational workloads using methodologies such as Kimball, Inmon, Data Vault, and 3NF.
- Develop and maintain ETL/ELT pipelines on bare-metal PostgreSQL systems and other on-premise data stores.
- Tune database and system performance — you’ll be hands-on with storage, memory, and network considerations.
- Work closely with analytics, product, and engineering teams to translate business needs into efficient data models and transformations.
- Automate and monitor data processes using shell scripting, cron jobs, and other Linux-based tooling.
- Maintain strong data quality, lineage, and documentation across the entire data stack.
Qualifications
- 4+ years of professional experience using SQL, with strong proficiency in PostgreSQL or similar relational databases.
- Deep understanding of data modeling principles (Kimball, Inmon, Vault, 3NF, etc.).
- Strong Linux skills — you’re more at home in a terminal than a GUI, and can troubleshoot, script, and optimize at the OS level.
- Comfortable working on bare-metal infrastructure (no managed cloud services).
- Experience building and maintaining ETL/ELT workflows in on-prem environments.
- Familiarity with version control (Git) and collaborative engineering practices.
- Proficiency in a scripting language such as Python or Bash.
Nice to Have
- Experience managing PostgreSQL at scale on physical hardware (tuning, replication, backup strategies).
- Exposure to data orchestration tools (Airflow, dbt, Prefect) deployed on bare metal.
- Knowledge of containerization (Docker) or configuration management (Ansible, Puppet, Chef).
- Interest in systems performance, observability, or low-level infrastructure optimization.
What You’ll Get
- Hands-on experience managing and scaling bare-metal data systems
- Ownership over mission-critical data infrastructure
- A pragmatic engineering culture that values simplicity, transparency, and reliability
- Fully Remote Part Time
