The
Transport department is responsible for building Zalando’s own first, middle & last mile transport platform. In the future, this platform will reduce the manual intervention of resources and enhance the opportunity for automation for better capacity steering, optimizing delivery lead times and efficiency towards calculating delivery on promise. We are providing optimal and scalable solutions to support Zalando's growth strategy.
As a
Principal Software Engineer , you will be the architect in an area of 3-6 engineering teams. Together with your peers organized in a principal community, you will consult the teams in best practices and set the standards for future software projects by choosing the right technologies and solutions. You will benefit from the experience in a larger company with specialists organized in technical communities.

What We'd Love You To Do (and Love Doing)
- You'll create highly scalable solutions to be used by Operations and external users like carriers and freight forwarders
- You'll define the architecture and lead the project by overseeing teams composed of experienced engineers and product managers.
- You'll coordinate the cooperation between our teams and the external stakeholders too
- You'll oversee the development and API design of an integrated system. You’ll be involved in the design, decision and planning process with focus on ensuring that Continuous Integration, Code Quality, Code Reviews, Test Coverage, etc. are kept at very high standards
- You'll join a team that is dedicated to delivering the highest standards when it comes to code quality and production environments. You will add value by leveraging current trends in software design, architecture and web services.
- As part of our Principal Engineering Community, you collaborate with other senior individual contributors to set engineering standards, guide decision-making for the technology landscape at Zalando via our Tech Radar .
WE'D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF...
- You have great knowledge in Java, Kotlin, Spring Boot, Docker, AWS, Postgres, Rest API design, and event systems like Kafka
- You have experience in full development cycle in an agile setting, including testing (manual and automated) and deployment to CI/CD systems
- You have sense of ownership and analytical thinking combined with your excellent communication skills (fluent in written & spoken English is a must) and willingness to share knowledge within and outside the team
