Northrop Grumman is currently looking for an experienced
Modeling & Simulation Manager to work with our Modeling and Simulation team (M&S). The successful candidate will work with the modeling and simulation team across projects to assure value-added implementation of our CM process, and to achieve and maintain a standardized build system for the team. The candidate will coordinate with other software teams for DevSecOps implementation and execution, and on CI/CD development and maintenance. This engineer will also be responsible for guiding the delivery process of all deliverables of the M&S team. The candidate will work with functional management to assist in optimizing and implementing AGILE processes. The candidate will also work to train other team members to proficiency in relevant tasks. There will likely be some opportunity for technical work in software development, analysis, and systems engineering, but the above roles will be the candidate’s primary responsibility.
Roles And Responsibilities
- Manage and lead a team focused on hardware emulation and integrating simulations with external components (embedded flight software, HIL systems, systems of simulations).
- Manage the staffing profile for a team of 8 to 12 Modeling & Simulation engineers and Software Engineers.
- Support senior manager in executing the strategy to motivate and to ensure a high performing engineering team. This includes use of Development Plans, stretch assignments, 1:1 feedback, coaching, training, and other tools.
- Apply sound software engineering principles and metrics, ensure compliance with processes and standards, and assist the entire M&S team to both make process more effective and leverage that process in a value-added way.
- Ensure deliverables meet technical quality, cost & schedule objectives.
- Support estimation of labor and review of Basis of Estimate documents for proposals associated with SW domain.
- Interface with all levels of leadership to meet or exceed performance for all program deliverables.
- The successful candidate will contribute both as a functional manager and as a technical contributor, with 20% to 35% of their time devoted to managerial tasks such as supporting direct reports with staffing assignments, knowledge transfer, training, educational reimbursement, and the Workday performance management lifecycle (goal planning, quarterly reviews).
- Technical contributions will likely include program support as well as direct technical work.
- The candidate will also contribute significantly to one or two areas of on-going technical work, such as hardware emulation, integrating our simulation into systems of simulations, assisting to develop our truth models, performance models and simulation infrastructure, and running our simulations for missile system verification and miscellaneous support activities.
Basic Qualifications for the Modeling & Simulation Manager Level 2:
- Bachelor’s degree in either Aerospace Engineering, Physics, SW engineering, or related STEM field with 8 years in Modeling & Simulation, Systems, Software engineering, or other relevant experience, or Master’s with 6 experience in the above fields, a Ph.D. with 4 years relevant experience in the above fields.
- 3+ years of development in C++ on a daily basis, with a thorough understanding of OO design principles, including full software lifecycle: specification, design, implementation, integration, debug and maintenance.
- A sufficient background in physics or mathematics to understand flight dynamics and sensor basics. (First year engineering physics courses in college will suffice)
- 2 years of experience in a formal or informal leadership role, such as functional manager, product owner, tech lead, or IPT lead, managing or directing the work of 6 or more people.
- 2 or more of the following: 2 years as an embedded software engineer; 3+ years in either weapon system modeling and simulation (especially 6-DOF) or Operation Analysis; Strong background in CI/CD; Experience in Systems Engineering, especially verifying requirements for a weapon system; Significant Experience in EVMS, or a high level of process leadership experience in SCRUM.
- Interim US Government Secret security level clearance or higher and eligible for a SAP level clearance.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience with version control tools such as Git.
- Experience with RTOS such as VxWorks.
- Experience using Atlassian Tool Suite: JIRA, Confluence, Bitbucket, SonarQube.
- Prior experience in leading a modeling and simulation team software team, or operations analysis team.
- Previous functional management experience leading a team of engineers for at least 1 year or more.
- Working knowledge of Earned Value, with the ability to build milestone schedules for execution purposes.
- Systems Engineering experience such as MBSE and/or verifying weapons systems (especially missile systems).

Primary Level Salary Range: $156,500.00 - $234,700.00
The above salary range represents a general guideline; however, Northrop Grumman considers a number of factors when determining base salary offers such as the scope and responsibilities of the position and the candidate's experience, education, skills and current market conditions.
Depending on the position, employees may be eligible for overtime, shift differential, and a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results. Employees in Vice President or Director positions may be eligible for Long Term Incentives. In addition, Northrop Grumman provides a variety of benefits including health insurance coverage, life and disability insurance, savings plan, Company paid holidays and paid time off (PTO) for vacation and/or personal business.
