About The Role

The Staff Software Engineer position at Block, within the Ledgering team of the Financial Platform organization, offers a unique opportunity to influence the core infrastructure that powers Cash App and Square. This role involves designing, developing, and maintaining scalable, high-availability ledger systems capable of processing millions of transactions daily with zero tolerance for discrepancies. As a key member of an autonomous engineering team, you will drive strategic technical initiatives, resolve complex technical challenges, and shape the future of ledgering technology. The role emphasizes mentorship, technical leadership, and collaboration across a globally distributed organization, including teams in the United States, Australia, and Europe. You will operate as a trusted advisor to senior leadership, influencing technical strategy and embedding innovative solutions like artificial intelligence into organizational practices.

Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience working on complex systems and delivering high-quality software solutions
  • Proven leadership in strategic or complex initiatives with organizational impact
  • Strong expertise in designing durable, scalable systems capable of handling high transaction volumes
  • Experience in mentoring and developing engineering talent
  • Excellent communication skills with the ability to influence technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Curiosity-driven mindset, thriving in ambiguous and evolving environments
  • Experience working within globally distributed teams
  • Deep understanding of Java, Kotlin, MySQL, Vitess, AWS, Kafka, and event-driven architecture
  • Familiarity with testing frameworks like JUnit, Hibernate, and Guice
  • Knowledge of HTTP, JSON, gRPC, and Protocol Buffers
