We are seeking an experienced and strategic Director of Total Rewards to lead our comprehensive compensation, benefits, and rewards programs across our organization of 3,000+ employees. This is an exceptional opportunity to shape our total rewards strategy, enhance employee engagement, and drive organizational success in a rapidly growing waste and renewable energy services sector.
The Director of Total Rewards will report to senior leadership and partner with Human Resources, Finance, and operational teams to design, implement, and optimize competitive compensation and benefits packages that attract, retain, and motivate our talented workforce.
Primary Responsibilities
Strategic Leadership & Planning
- Develop and execute a comprehensive total rewards strategy aligned with business objectives, market competitiveness, and organizational culture
- Conduct market analysis and competitive benchmarking to ensure our compensation and benefits packages remain competitive within the industry
- Partner with Finance and executive leadership to establish total rewards budgets and ROI metrics
- Stay current with industry trends, regulatory changes, and best practices in compensation management
Compensation Management
- Design, maintain, and administer competitive compensation structures, pay grades, and salary bands across all organizational levels
- Conduct job evaluations and ensure equitable pay practices across the organization
- Develop and communicate compensation philosophy and guidelines to management teams
- Analyze compensation data to identify trends, gaps, and opportunities for improvement
Benefits Administration & Strategy
- Oversee the development and administration of comprehensive benefits programs including health insurance, retirement plans, wellness initiatives, and supplemental benefits
- Manage vendor relationships with benefits carriers, TPAs, and service providers
- Ensure compliance with ACA, ERISA, and other applicable regulations
- Lead open enrollment planning and communication campaigns
Incentive and Recognition Programs
- Design and manage performance-based incentive programs that drive desired behaviors and outcomes
- Develop recognition programs that celebrate achievements and reinforce company culture
- Evaluate effectiveness of incentive programs and make data-driven recommendations for improvement
Team Leadership
- Build, develop, and mentor a high-performing compensation and benefits team
- Provide training and support to HR staff and managers on total rewards programs
- Foster collaboration across HR functions and business units
Compliance & Reporting
- Ensure all compensation and benefits programs comply with federal, state, and local regulations
- Prepare and present regular reports on total rewards metrics, program performance, and budget utilization
- Maintain accurate records and documentation
Required Qualifications
- 8+ years of progressive experience in total rewards, compensation, and benefits management
- Demonstrated experience developing and implementing comprehensive total rewards strategies
- Strong knowledge of compensation best practices, market analysis, and job evaluation methodologies
- Expert-level understanding of employee benefits, including health insurance, retirement plans, and compliance requirements
- Proven experience with HRIS systems, compensation management software, and data analysis tools
- Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and project management skills
- Strong communication and presentation abilities
- Experience leading and developing teams
- Bachelor's degree in Human Resources, Business Administration, or related field
- PHR, SPHR, CCP, or similar HR certification preferred
Desired Qualifications
- Experience in manufacturing, energy, waste management, or similar industries
- Familiarity with total rewards technology platforms
- Background in union negotiations or multi-site operations management
- MBA or advanced business degree
- Experience managing benefits for large, geographically dispersed workforces
Compensation & Benefits
- Salary Range: $190,000 - $225,000 (based on experience and qualifications)
