Founding AUV Engineer in United State

Visa sponsorship & Relocation 4 hours ago

Overview:

Thalassa Robotics is a venture-backed startup building swarms of autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs) to monitor critical subsea infrastructure in real-time. Our mission is to enable persistent visibility of subsea assets across the globe, from telecom cables to offshore oil & gas platforms. We design our AUV swarms to enable live high-bandwidth data and human-in-the-loop. Operators onshore will view data streams (e.g., HD video, 3D sonar) safely onshore and remotely interface with the swarm dynamically.

Role:

We are seeking a senior mechanical engineer with subsea experience to lead our AUV hardware development team. In this role, you will manage the AUV hardware team, work closely with the AUV software & comms layer teams, and interface directly with customers to understand their needs. Candidates should be capable leaders with strong foundations in cross-functional engineering who are excited to tackle novel technical challenges.

We are a small, focused team looking for mission-driven candidates who are passionate about their work. If you are excited to advance the frontiers of subsea technology, explore uncharted depths, and protect our oceans and the assets within them, we would love to hear from you!

This will be an in-person role in the Bay Area; we can assist with relocation efforts for candidates from other geographies.

Responsibilities:

Own the end-to-end AUV hardware development process, including:

  • Integration of subsystems including navigation, communications, environmental sensors, power management, internal electronics, etc.
  • Testing and validation of products for reliability, ruggedness, and performance
  • Cross-functional collaboration with the AUV software team, wireless communications team, business development group, and other stakeholders
  • Management and growth of the AUV hardware team, which is expected to eventually include mechanical, electrical, and integration engineers, roboticists, firmware specialists, and product managers.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of systems engineering experience, including work on subsea systems such as AUVs, ROVs, or gliders. Experience running the full product development process, from design to integration and testing.
  • Strong proficiency with CAD, preferably familiar with Autodesk Fusion or Solidworks [x programs]
  • Understanding of DFM & DFA principles; experience with manufacturing/fabrication processes including standard additive and subtractive processes
  • Proficiency designing and validating PCBs

Nice to Have:

  • Materials science knowledge, particularly with respect to metal alloys and PMCs
  • Programming experience, especially familiarity with ROS
  • Sensor software experience, specifically with onboard navigational components.
