About The Role

Rio Tinto’s Asset Management Supply Chain Services Division is seeking a Specialist Engineer – Rail Infrastructure to provide expert track engineering and technical guidance across the rail network. This role is critical in the development, implementation, and maintenance of engineering standards that ensure safe, cost-effective, and reliable rail infrastructure design and installation.

The successful candidate will contribute to the continuous improvement of track systems by applying specialist knowledge across key sub-discipline streams, including

  • Track geometry and stability – ensuring optimal alignment, lateral stability, and integrity of the rail network
  • Turnout management – overseeing the design, installation, maintenance and renewal requirements for track switches and crossings
  • Rail management – implementing best practices for rail defects and surface treatment, as well as rail weld and joint integrity

This position plays a pivotal role in supporting Rio Tinto’s commitment to operational excellence and safety across its heavy haul rail operations.

Reporting to the Superintendent of Engineering – Asset Management, you will be responsible for

  • Coordinate and oversee the implementation of asset management systems across sites
  • Monitor system performance and ensure alignment with business objectives
  • Gather and analyse stakeholder feedback to identify opportunities for process improvement
  • Collaborate with Business Units and Sites to embed and sustain asset management practices
  • Provide technical engineering support to projects, operations, and maintenance teams
  • Coach, mentor, and train site personnel to build asset management capability
  • Facilitate knowledge sharing and replication of best practices across sites
  • Support the development and rollout of the Rio Tinto Asset Management Assurance Program
  • Ensure compliance with Group engineering and performance standards
  • Contribute to the creation and review of engineering standards for Rail Infrastructure
  • Respond to technical queries and requests within the scope of existing standards
  • Review and approve engineering drawings for rail infrastructure assets
  • Manage small-scale engineering projects, including prioritization and execution
  • Act as a technical authority for engineering changes and conduct compliance audits
  • Apply professional expertise to solve complex problems and recommend improvements

What You’ll Bring

  • Proven organisational and technical leadership capabilities
  • Strong foundation in engineering principles and their practical application
  • In-depth knowledge of asset management frameworks and best practices
  • Understanding of project management methodologies
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Proficiency in root cause analysis and problem-solving techniques
  • Experience working with relevant asset classes (e.g., rail infrastructure, heavy industry)
  • Ability to mentor and develop team members
  • Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills
  • Collaborative mindset with a focus on continuous improvement
  • C Class manual drivers license

Qualifications

  • Recognised Engineering Degree (relevant discipline)
  • Chartered Professional Engineer (CPEng – Engineers Australia) or willingness and ability to obtain this qualification

Where you’ll be working

You and your team will be Perth-based with opportunity to work flexibly from home combined with time in our Central Park offices. There will be the opportunity for some Pilbara site travel from time to time, however this will be performed on an ad-hoc basis.

In the Pilbara region of Western Australia, we own a world-class, integrated network of 17 mines, four independent port terminals, a rail network spanning nearly 2,000 kilometres and related infrastructure – all designed to respond rapidly to changes in demand. We are one of the world’s leading producers and exporters of iron ore.

Our privately owned and operated rail network is an essential part of our integrated production process and services our 16 mines across the Pilbara via almost 2,000 km of track. With rail depots located at Tom Price, Cape Lambert and Dampier (7 Mile), most trains are autonomously operated and typically comprise three locomotives and 240 ore cars stretching to approximately 2.4 kilometres in length. We are also applying and adapting technology to improve safety and productivity across our rail network.
