Job Description Summary
The purpose of the Engineering Lead is to support the Lab leadership and the teams within their area to deliver against the strategy and their Are Are you ready to join our Transport Platform team and help us to shape and deliver the next phase of our transformation?
The role sits within the Transport Platform, which is a key member of the wider Consumer Lending Business Unit. Our mission is to keep Britain moving by providing customer focused solutions to facilitate access to vehicles, maintenance, and related services including Digital account management. All using modern frameworks and native Cloud capabilities. Whilst embedding DevOps and Agile working practices to enable feature teams to increase autonomy and effectiveness.
As an Engineering Lead, you’ll be accountable for all facets of engineering (across both build and support) across multiple engineering teams within the Lab, working alongside the Product Owner to achieve business and technology outcomes whilst retaining a deep focus on service.
Job Description

- Leading teams of engineers to design, develop and integrate software features to achieve their goals. Aligning team goals with the needs of the broader lab, platform and group.
- Collaborating with the Product Owner and Customer Journey Manager to deliver features on the product roadmaps, manage down technical debt, maintain the health of production instances and to create the space to develop the skills needed by the target technology architecture.
- Engineering solutions to be reliable, scalable, performant, and secure through adequate solution design, utilising endorsed technologies and applying common build patterns. Engage Enterprise Architects, Solution Architects and Technical Communities where needed to drive solution reuse, avoid complexity and creation of point solutions.
- Seeking to adopt the groups tooling capabilities as these mature to access development practice gains through standardised automation in relation to pace, quality and safety.
- Seeking to better understand the work through planning, commit to clear achievable goals, drive appropriate prioritisation, foster collective responsibility of ceremonies, escalate impediments accordingly and to manage external dependencies adequately.
- Lean-in and take a hands-on ownership for unblocking technical challenges and forward look to prove out new patterns and technical solutions ready for full use within the team, lab or platform. Where needed, act as a Chapter Lead to drive cross platform strategies and solutions.
- Collaborate with Agility Leads to advance the effectiveness of the teams by installing change that increases the cadence of delivery, reduces cost ownership, and persists high quality of change. Champion the benefits of a single common framework over team specific practices.
- Install active application custodianship to manage incidents, compliance findings, risks and running costs where it is the right answer for the team to maintain production instances. Where it is not, ensure performing teams are equipped to succeed.
- Working to build a strong team by coaching, developing and mentoring engineers on how to achieve their team, technical and personal goals. Modelling group Values and accessing frameworks, learning collateral and early careers programmes to build rounded engineering capability within your teams.
- Developing the leadership team within the Lab, by role modelling Group Values and expectations, and holding them to account for clear individual objectives. To grow the people within your Lab and create a true learning culture where team members can grow and develop. In doing so, accessing Group Wide Frameworks, learning collateral and early careers programmes to build a rounded engineering capability within your Lab.
- Embedding Agile and DevOps practices and constantly reviewing opportunities to improve the flow of work. Providing the business and technical capabilities that enable and empower feature teams to design, build and release change themselves locally through smaller more frequent releases.
- Ensuring that costs are carefully managed against available budgets and that opportunities to improve the efficiency of spend are constantly reviewed. Supply critical technical feedback to the investment process to obtain funding for key solution opportunities.

To be considered for and successful in this role, you will need to be able to demonstrate the below:
- Extensive practical experience in providing engineering team oversight to develop strategic solutions to achieve business outcomes by anticipating issues, challenges, and opportunities. With experience of working in a complex systems architecture comprised of modern and legacy solutions, inhouse and product solutions.
- Extensive practical experience in providing engineering team oversight to develop strategic, data-driven solutions that achieve measurable business outcomes. Skilled in anticipating issues, challenges, and opportunities within complex systems architectures—spanning modern cloud-native platforms and legacy systems, including both in-house and third-party product solutions. Proven ability to design and optimise ETL pipelines and data ingestion workflows using tools such as DBT, Apache Airflow, and custom Python-based frameworks.
- Deep experience in leading modern engineering teams within enterprise environments, balancing transformation initiatives with operational stability. Adept at managing risk, enforcing security standards, and making informed trade-offs between service reliability and innovation. Regularly leverage SQL and Python to interrogate datasets, validate assumptions, and support decision-making.
- Practical experience in empowering agile teams to deliver value early and often. Foster a culture of iterative development and continuous improvement, with a strong emphasis on data quality, observability, and performance monitoring across analytics platforms.
- Naturally inquisitive about emerging technologies and their application to improve customer journeys and operational efficiency. Demonstrated commitment to continuous learning through the adoption of modern data practices, including data modelling in DBT, automated testing, and CI/CD for analytics workflows.
- Authentic engagement with cross-functional teams to embed a culture of collaboration, ownership, and accountability. Build high-performing, multidisciplinary teams that take initiative and consistently deliver on commitments, with a shared understanding of data as a strategic asset.
- Passionate about cultivating great engineering and analytics talent. Actively support capability uplift through targeted training programmes, strategic external recruitment, and early careers initiatives focused on data engineering and analytics.
- Strong communicator with the ability to translate complex technical and analytical concepts into clear, actionable insights for stakeholders. Routinely use data visualisation, dashboards, and analytical storytelling to explain the ‘why’ behind decisions, ensuring alignment and transparency across all levels of the organisation.
