About The Role

The Software Engineer, Trusted Computing and Cryptography at OpenAI plays a critical role within the Security organization, focusing on deploying high-performance cryptographic solutions at scale to secure OpenAI’s infrastructure, data, and products. This position involves designing, developing, and maintaining advanced cryptographic systems, key management solutions, and trusted hardware enclaves such as TPMs, Secure Boot, Nitro Enclaves, and confidential computing platforms. The engineer will collaborate with researchers, security experts, and other engineering teams to integrate cutting-edge cryptographic techniques into production and research environments, ensuring robust security and trustworthiness of OpenAI’s technological ecosystem. The role offers flexibility for remote work within the US, with occasional travel to San Francisco headquarters or other offices, and includes a hybrid work model of three days in the office per week. Relocation assistance is available for qualified candidates.

Qualifications

  • Extensive experience as a software engineer working on large-scale, production systems
  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Rust, and/or C/C++
  • Strong understanding of cryptographic systems and key management at scale
  • Experience with security primitives including TPM2, Secure Boot, secure enclaves, and confidential computing platforms
  • Knowledge of operating system security measures such as remote attestation and host integrity verification
  • Hands-on experience with designing and implementing hardware security modules and trusted hardware solutions
  • Ability to own problems end-to-end, from design to deployment and debugging
  • Experience in architecting, observing, and troubleshooting distributed production systems
  • Self-motivated with a proactive approach to problem-solving and continuous learning
  • Strong teamwork and communication skills, with a humble attitude and eagerness to support colleagues
  • Willingness to learn new technologies and acquire missing knowledge as needed
  • Experience refactoring or rebuilding systems to accommodate increasing scale and complexity

Responsibilities

  • Develop high-quality, performance-critical code in Rust and Python to support cryptographic and security functionalities
  • Collaborate with research and engineering teams to integrate advanced cryptographic techniques into OpenAI’s infrastructure
  • Create and maintain foundational libraries supporting cryptographic operations and security protocols
  • Design, implement, and manage secure key management systems suitable for production environments
  • Deploy systems utilizing security primitives such as TPM2, Secure Boot, Nitro Enclaves, and confidential computing platforms to enhance trust
  • Research and implement security measures at the operating system level, including remote attestation and runtime TPM measurement
  • Maintain and improve hardware security modules and trusted hardware enclaves to ensure data integrity and confidentiality
  • Participate in security audits, risk assessments, and incident response activities to uphold security standards
  • Stay updated on emerging security threats and cryptographic advancements to proactively enhance infrastructure security
