About The Role

We are seeking an experienced and technically proficient Staff ML System Engineer to join our team remotely, with the expectation of reporting to our Mountain View location at least three times a week if residing within a 50-mile radius. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing scalable, reliable, high-performance machine learning training infrastructure that supports cutting-edge AI research and model development initiatives. You will work closely with machine learning engineers, research scientists, and cross-functional teams to build robust AI platforms that enable advanced autonomous driving technologies across GM's vehicle lineup. Your expertise will directly impact the efficiency, scalability, and operational excellence of our AI training workflows, ensuring that GM remains at the forefront of automotive AI innovation.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree or higher in Computer Science, Electrical Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent professional experience.
  • Minimum of 7+ years of professional software engineering experience.
  • At least 3+ years of specialized experience in AI/ML infrastructure, including enabling distributed training for large-scale models.
  • Proficiency in Python programming, with hands-on experience using frameworks such as PyTorch (preferred), TensorFlow, or similar.
  • Experience with distributed computing, GPU computing, and cloud environments such as AWS, GCP, or Azure.
  • Willingness to travel to Sunnyvale, CA, as needed.
  • Ability to work effectively in highly ambiguous and dynamic environments.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the design and development of scalable, reliable machine learning frameworks to support large-scale model training.
  • Conduct performance analysis and optimization of training workflows to maximize resource utilization across heterogeneous hardware environments, reducing costs and improving efficiency.
  • Enhance system observability, debuggability, and operational excellence to ensure platform stability and user satisfaction.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate new features, tools, and technologies into the existing ML platform infrastructure.
  • Develop and implement solutions supporting advanced training techniques such as Fully Sharded Data Parallel (FSDP), Pipeline Parallelism, and other scalable training solutions for large foundational models.
  • Profile, analyze, debug, and optimize training performance, including data loading and processing pipelines.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to team members, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.
