As a Staff Performance Engineer, Marketplace, you will be responsible for driving performance improvements across a high-impact eCommerce platform that connects creators with consumers. You will work on both frontend and backend systems, optimizing critical services such as chef marketing, payment gateways, promotions, and order processing. This role offers the opportunity to identify performance bottlenecks, implement scalable solutions, and influence architecture decisions while collaborating with cross-functional teams. You will mentor engineers, introduce innovative technologies, and ensure a seamless experience for both users and internal stakeholders. This position is fully remote within Latin America and allows you to make a measurable impact in a dynamic, fast-growing marketplace environment.
Accountabilities
Your main responsibilities will include:
- Independently identify, diagnose, and resolve complex performance issues across the full stack
- Design and implement scalable, high-performance solutions for critical systems including marketing infrastructure, payment processing, and order finalization
- Establish robust monitoring, alerting, and reporting systems to track performance and proactively recommend improvements
- Conduct detailed code reviews, providing guidance on efficient algorithms, optimal data structures, and performance best practices
- Collaborate with product, finance, and business operations teams to translate business requirements into technical solutions
- Lead capacity planning, load testing, and architecture discussions to ensure the platform scales with growth
- Mentor engineers and foster a culture of performance awareness and technical excellence across the organization
- Evaluate and adopt new technologies, frameworks, and AI tools to enhance the technical stack and development velocity
Requirements
To excel in this role, you should have:
- 8+ years of experience in frontend and backend development with expertise in Kotlin or Node, React, Next.js, and SQL databases
- Proven experience architecting and scaling complex backend systems in fast-paced, high-growth environments
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, service-oriented and event-driven architectures
- Deep knowledge of system performance optimization and scalability best practices
- Experience developing frontend applications with React, Next.js, and GraphQL
- Proven ability to translate ambiguous requirements into actionable plans and deliver high-quality results
- Advanced English communication skills, with the ability to articulate complex ideas to both technical and non-technical audiences
- Demonstrated experience mentoring engineers and leading technical initiatives
Preferred:
- Experience with AWS, Kubernetes, Terraform, and cloud infrastructure
- Familiarity with observability tools like DataDog and logging frameworks
- Experience leveraging AI-assisted coding tools (e.g., Cursor, Windsurf)
- Background in eCommerce, marketplaces, or fintech environments
- Knowledge of pricing algorithms, promotions engines, or dynamic pricing models
