About Gretel

Gretel is an independent branding, strategy, and design studio based in Brooklyn, NY. We are both rigorous and experimental, intellectual and intuitive in our pursuit of smart, striking solutions to the complex challenges of modern branding. From local arts and culture to global commercial projects, our practice spans diverse sectors, disciplines, and formats. We uncover what organizations truly stand for and create the most unique expression of that truth—a process demanding genuine curiosity and innovation.

To support this approach, we foster a creative culture rooted in education and experimentation both inside and outside the studio. We balance client projects with internal creative exploration, dedicating every Wednesday to cultural programming, including cross-disciplinary talks, hands-on workshops, and screenings. We seek inspiration beyond our studio walls through museum visits and field trips, drawing connections between design history and new approaches.

We nurture growth through a creative stipend and intentional mentorship, pairing team members based on complementary skills, creating an environment where everyone both teaches and learns. Our New Design High School mentorship program and partnership with Diversity in Design extend this philosophy into the wider community.

About the Role

We're looking for a motivated mid-to-senior level Designer/Animator who brings exceptional visual storytelling skills to both static and motion formats. Core to our work is developing and defining signature motion behaviors that bring brands to life through digital, web, video, product and UI experiences.

You thrive at the intersection of graphic design and animation, and are energized by the opportunity to bring your design work to life across a range of platforms and formats. You’ll work closely with creative, motion, and strategy teams to create design systems that are expressive, flexible, refined, and distinct.

You’re creatively curious and love experimenting with design solutions, processes, tools, and technology. And you’re as interested in pursuing internal, experimental, self-initiated projects as you are about client work.

What You'll Do

• Design and help develop brand and identity systems and tools

• Create visual systems that scale across digital, experiential, print, and motion contexts

• Develop signature motion behaviors and define animation principles as foundational elements of brand identity

• Explore techniques and tools that evolve how we create and deliver work

• Collaborate on internally driven, experimental, design, motion, and technology projects

• Build animated assets for web, social, product, and brand campaigns as needed

• Support the development of visual storytelling for client presentations, reels, and brand films

• Present creative work to internal and client teams with clarity and insight

• Mentor junior team members and contribute to a strong, collaborative, candid, supportive creative culture

What We're Looking For

• 4–6 years of experience in visual design and animation, ideally within brand or agency settings

• A portfolio that showcases strong branding and motion storytelling, from concept to execution

• Deep expertise in Adobe Creative Suite and motion tools such as After Effects or similar

• Understanding of design systems, typography, layout, and color theory

• Expertise and experience with Figma and familiarity with digital product design workflows

• A collaborative mindset with strong communication skills

Benefits + Perks

• Hybrid model (3 fixed days in office, 2 remote) 20 of your typically fixed days can be changed to remote each year, prorated based on start (the flex day count might change in the future)

• 401k plan with a discretionary employer match

• Health care coverage: for basic Aetna medical, dental, and vision plans, Gretel covers premiums with no additional cost to staff

• 20 days PTO, prorated based on start (vacation/personal, sick days don’t count)

• 5 Refresh days (can be used for mental & emotional wellbeing)

• 23 office bank/holiday closings (includes 2-week December holiday)

• Weekly Breakfast (Mondays)

• On-site and off-site creative workshops, guest speakers, team outings and other opportunities to connect

• Paid parental leave

• Relocation stipend on a per-case basis

• Learning and development stipend
