About The Role

We are seeking a highly skilled Software Engineer specializing in Security Observability to join our dedicated Security team. In this pivotal role, you will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining secure, scalable systems that enhance OpenAI’s security observability infrastructure. Your expertise will enable the company to monitor, analyze, and respond to security threats effectively, ensuring the integrity of our technology, data, and operations. This role offers flexibility for remote work or the opportunity to relocate to our offices in San Francisco, Seattle, or New York City, with relocation assistance available.

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in software engineering, data pipelines, and cloud infrastructure, with a focus on security-related data management. You will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams, including Detection & Response (D&R), to implement solutions that improve security visibility, forensic capabilities, and compliance efforts. Your contributions will directly support OpenAI’s mission to develop safe and beneficial AI systems by ensuring a robust security posture across all platforms and research initiatives.

Qualifications

  • Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, Golang, or similar.
  • Experience with infrastructure as code tools like Terraform.
  • Hands-on experience working with cloud platforms such as Azure.
  • Strong understanding of data pipeline architecture and maintenance, especially for security data.
  • Background in security, SRE, or database management is preferred.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with security and engineering teams.
  • Proactive problem-solving skills with attention to detail.
  • Experience in forensic investigations and compliance support is a plus.

Responsibilities

  • Design and develop scalable software systems that support security observability across OpenAI’s infrastructure.
  • Build and maintain data pipelines that centralize and store security-relevant data from diverse sources.
  • Enhance the resilience and reliability of data systems to ensure high platform availability.
  • Collaborate with Detection & Response teams and other security units to reduce organizational security risks.
  • Contribute to data engineering efforts supporting forensic investigations and compliance activities.
  • Implement security best practices in software development and data management.
  • Continuously monitor, analyze, and improve security data visibility and forensic capabilities.
  • Stay updated on emerging security threats and integrate new tools and techniques accordingly.
