The Platform Manager position for 36.5 hours per week.

The University are making a centralised nano/micro fabrication facility, which is called the Nanofabrication Research Technology Platform (“Facility”). We are seeking to appoint a Platform Manager to manage the facility. They will develop, implement and manage the staff, resources and facilities necessary to ensure the Platform becomes world leading and meets the appropriate legal requirements, standards of performance and welfare in all of the services it delivers, and so enable all nanofabrication research across the University.

The Platform Manager will be responsible for the stewardship of bespoke technology platforms and associated equipment worth approximately £5 million, ensuring that it delivers internationally competitive nano and micro fabrication resource for the university research community.

The role will require you implement and advise on service delivery and experimental design to all current and prospective users of the facility, including university staff and academic collaborations.

The successful candidate must have previous experience of specialist tool maintenance. Desirably, they will have experience in cleanroom operations and/or semiconductor device fabrication with an ability to work in a semiconductor laboratory environment for high purity semiconductor materials. This role will lead a technicians’ team within a busy department, and you will need to be flexible and organised to manage a varied workload.

About You

We are looking for someone with significant experience in working with specialist scientific facilities and tools related to physics, engineering, chemistry or materials science. This would desirably be by working in a semiconductor laboratory environment for high purity semiconductor materials.

Along with the Research Technology Platform Director, you will be responsible for the management of the annual budget which includes facility running costs, procurement, maintenance costs, and income generation. You should be comfortable with responsibility of the provision of financial estimates for experimental and research work with an annual turnover being reported.

You will desirably possess strong technical expertise in nano/ microfabrication processing, with experience in some of the following: lithography, metal deposition, oxide deposition, wet chemical processing or plasma etching.

You will have a strong background in design, technical diagrams, as well as health and safety legislation.

The ideal candidate will have the ability to build effective relationships with users and customers, internal and external to the organisation and demonstrate previous successes and skills transference to others.

You will have the ability to interpret complex instructions, analyse and implement detailed specifications.

You must have excellent interpersonal, written and verbal communication skills and the ability to work on your own initiative and manage a small team/project or coordinate multiple projects.
