This position is a part of the Wood Products business in the Grande Prairie, AB Lumber Operations. This role will report to the Technical and Engineering Department Manager. Working under close guidance with assigned mentors, this individual will be accountable for growing and strengthening their leadership abilities, technical skills and general business understanding of the manufacturing processes and operations of a Wood Products mill, and other major functional areas.

The Sawmill, Kilns, and Planermill employ approximately 230 people. Annual Lumber production is approximately 300 million board feet of SPF dimensional lumber. The mill has a history of continuous improvement and has undergone major expansion in both the Sawmill and Planermill. The Sawmill is scheduled to undergo a major retooling project for the Trim/Sort/Stack line, while the Batch Kilns are planned to be replaced with Continuous Drying Kilns. The Position

This Is a Permanent/full Time Position Reporting To The Grande Prairie Lumber Technical And Engineering Department Manager. Following An Initial Week-long Safety Orientation, There Will Be a Short On-boarding Period To Help Become Familiar With The Manufacturing Environment. Once The Initial Onboarding Is Complete, The First Multi-year Assignment Will Focus On Leading The Following Major Technology Areas

  • Safety – a core Value at Weyerhaeuser and is integrated into all aspects of our Engineering and Manufacturing processes, including leadership of CEC, Z462 and Z463 electrical standards, QMP ownership with the Safety Codes Council Electrical Branch of Alberta
  • APEGA Responsible member for the Permit to Practice and associated PPMP
  • Site Engineering responsibilities
  • Electrical Engineering and Maintenance of 13.8kV Power Distribution Systems to 3V Plant Floor Sensors
  • Drawing Control/Management including AutoCAD, Visio, SOLIDWORKS
  • Process Controls & Automation including PLCs, HMIs, Motion Control, VFDs, Visual Studio, Microcontrollers, ActivPlant Historian, Networking – Serial/RS-232/RS-485/Modbus RTU, Modbus+, Modbus TCP, Ethernet, Ethernet/IP, CIP and CIP Motion, DeviceNET, Cameras, DVR, Streaming direct from cameras via C# and Axis Camera API, SQL – T-SQL + LINQ, ActivPlant Historian, Cameras, DVR, Streaming direct from cameras via C# and Axis Camera API, IT
  • Optimization – maximize shareholder returns by maximizing sales realizations, recovery, and throughput
  • Lead SizeCheck (machine QC hardware/software) Integration and Programming
  • Team Leader for QC department
  • Technical people development including Engineers, Technologists, and Trade
  • Manage PLC/HMI/Optimization programming and act in part as system integrator – coding will be required
  • All aspects of Project Engineering/Management including:
  • Safety (toolbox meetings, permits, safe work plans, field audits, etc.), scope, feasibility analysis, design and engineering, planning, development, budgeting, cost tracking, scheduling, material and labor procurement, project-related, construction, installation and execution, programming, work with suppliers during commissioning and start-up to ensure all systems perform as expected, PSU, then validate results through equipment performance testing and certifications
  • Electrical & Control Team Reviews (and other disciplines) – including schedules, equipment, components, vendor manuals, documentation
  • Lock-out planning and support for Operations/Maintenance including managing equipment numbers and labeling
  • Change Management Processes and reviews with Leadership, Operations, and Maintenance teams
  • Assist the development of the process control scope with the Technical Department Manager, and Project Managers
  • Drawing Organization and Management for Internal/External Electrical/Controls Packages
  • Develop and deliver training on Process Control & Automation Systems and Software and/or organizing of outside/vendor providers
  • Develop and manage vendor access to Process Control Systems along with QC/QA and other Tech Department Engineers/Technologists/Trades

The Successful Candidate Will Have The Following Attributes

  • A strong commitment to working safely and protecting the safety of others
  • Work effectively within team settings in demanding environments
  • Be a self-starter and quick learner with strong interpersonal and communication/documentation skills
  • Required to be a registered Engineer with APEGA (E.I.T. or P.Eng.) in good standing
  • Hold an Engineering Degree in one of the following disciplines (or the like/equivalent):

electrical, electronics, automation, process controls, industrial

  • Knowledge and experience in project and contractor management, industrial site safe work practices, industrial equipment theory and operations, AutoCAD/Visio/SOLIDWORKS, and Microsoft Office Suite
  • Experience with automation and controls using AB/Rockwell PLCs, Modicon PLCs, VFDs, and Motion Control including programming of PLCs and HMIs, as well as Visual Studio .NET experience in VB.NET and C#, and SQL

Preference Will Be Given To Those With

  • Minimum 2-5 years of Electrical or Process Control related Engineering experience with a solid background and understanding of PLC/HMI systems in industrial plants
  • Manufacturing Experience in a similar industry
  • Experience with programming in Visual Studio .NET would be an asset
  • Experience with databases and systems (preferably Microsoft SQL and T-SQL or LINQ)
  • SAP experience (i.e. work management, procurement, cost tracking, PMs, BOMs, as related to projects and maintenance)
  • Knowledge of applicable codes and standards relevant to Alberta (e.g. CEC 2024 Edition, Z462-24, Z463-24)

The lumber mill site is located 12 km South of the city of Grande Prairie. Grande Prairie boasts a population of over 70,000 in the city proper and 100,000 in the city and county. It is 460 km North West of Edmonton and connected by a 4-lane highway. The air traveler is served by the Regional Airport which is serviced by both West Jet and Air Canada. Grande Prairie is the regional center for Northwestern Alberta and Northeastern British Columbia servicing a population of over 300,000 people. Grande Prairie is a young and active city with opportunities to experience a mix of urban, rural, and wilderness recreations.

Compensation : This role is eligible for our annual merit-increase program, and we are targeting a salary range of $94,200 - $137,400 based on your level of skills, qualifications and experience. You will also be eligible for our Annual Incentive Program, which offers a cash bonus targeting 10% of base pay. Potential plan funding may range from zero to two times that target.
