Senior Data Scientist in AUSTRALIA

Remote 6 months ago

Role Description

As a Senior Data Scientist at GYLD, you will lead the design, validation and development of the analytics systems that power our proprietary platform actively used to guide 60+ game projects, including AAA studios and indie developers. This system has been actively used to inform game design decisions, strategic release planning, risk evaluation, opportunity analysis and generate new research findings.

You’ll combine advanced statistical analysis, machine learning, and domain expertise in the games industry to solve high-impact problems, including recommendation engines, market intelligence tools, and automated data pipelines.

This role requires a proactive professional who can shape our technical direction, conduct world-first research into market analytics, and ensure our tools align with the unique needs of game developers and publishers.

Key Responsibilities

Technical Leadership

  • Architect and deploy scalable machine learning models (e.g., recommendation systems, NLP for decision support) to solve core platform objectives.
  • Evaluate, select, and implement the adoption of modern tools/platforms (e.g., Azure ML, Databricks, Airflow) to streamline ETL, analytics, and deployment.
  • Own end-to-end data pipelines: ingestion, cleaning, transformation, and storage (SQL/PostgreSQL, Redis).

Domain-Driven Analytics

  • Conduct statistical analysis to derive market insights (e.g., game design trends, publisher preferences, funding success factors).
  • Translate complex game industry data (sales, player behavior, genre trends) into actionable reports for non-technical stakeholders.
  • Design and develop modular analytics tools based on specific industry use-cases.

Platform Development

  • Collaborate with engineers to integrate models into our Python-based monolith modular / micro-service architecture.
  • Build defensible AI assets (e.g., proprietary datasets, technology, fundamental research findings).

Strategic Innovation

  • Proactively identify gaps in our tech stack (e.g., monitoring tools, experiment tracking) and advocate for solutions.
  • Stay ahead of AI trends and evaluate their applicability to gaming-specific challenges.
  • Design experiments to validate hypotheses about the games industry.

Stakeholder Engagement

  • Present insights to clients, investors, and internal teams with clarity and impact.
  • Document processes rigorously via Git, wikis, and internal knowledge bases.

Required Qualifications

Experience / Qualifications:

  • Degree in Statistics, Mathematics, Data Sciences, Business Analytics or related quantitative disciplines -or- demonstrable relevant industry experience with tangible outcomes.
  • 5+ years of directly relevant experience.

Technical Expertise:

  • Mastery of Python (NumPy, Pandas, Scikit-learn, PyTorch/TensorFlow).
  • Advanced SQL and experience with SQL/Vector Databases.
  • Proven track record deploying ML models in production (Azure experience preferred).
  • Strong statistical foundation (e.g., hypothesis testing, Bayesian methods, experimental design).
  • Demonstrated history of evaluating, selecting and deploying new analytics tools, best-practices and ownership of project/pipeline undertakings.

Preferred Skills and/or Qualifications

Domain Knowledge

Prior experience in the video games or entertainment industry (as either analyst or developer) is highly desirable and considered a significant advantage.

Communication

Excellent communication skills with a proven record of translating complex analyses into accessible insights for diverse audiences.

Leadership

Candidates with prior leadership in analytics projects (inclusive of open source) and working within small-medium teams will be highly preferred.

Considerations

This role is perfect for someone:

  •  Innate curiosity and drive to discover the underlying factors driving the games industry.
  • Rigorous attention to validation and statistical significance.
  • Self-directed and assertive on technology, tool and stack selections.
  • Thrives in environments where their expertise is both trusted and relied upon.
  • Prefers to set their own schedule and working hours to balance collaboration with task focus.
