Overview: I am seeking a skilled Unity Developer to join a game development project. The game combines design, strategy, and action elements, and is set in World War 2. Players can build vehicles, buildings, and infantry weapons, and utilize them across various level types. They can control the units they create in RTS mode, or directly in first-person and third-person modes.
This will be a PC game, supported by a well-known publisher. The contract and wages will be handled directly by the publisher.
I aim to release the game on Steam by Autumn 2025. While most of the game mechanics are complete, there is still a need for content creation, level design, optimisation, and additional features. This role will primarily involve completing these aspects of the game's development, and the position will probably extend beyond the game's release.
Job Responsibilities Include:
• Designing and building game levels.
• Creating terrain, painting terrain textures and adding details (such as trees, grass, rocks etc).
• Working with post-processing and lighting to make scenes to achieve high visual standards.
• Optimising level performance (e.g. LODs and billboarding for grass and trees).
• Working on new game features.
Required Skills:
• Level Design and scene layout
• Experienced with Unity, especially terrain elements mentioned in the job responsibilities
• Version control using Git
Desirable Skills:
• C# and scripting
• Code optimisation
• Bug fixing
• Familiarity with FPS Controllers (to create or modify character controllers)
• Behaviour trees and state machines (for AI units)
• Pathfinding (NavMesh)
Potential extra development tasks (for candidates with the necessary skills - desirable but not necessary):
• Game AI: The infantry and vehicles use different AI systems, which need to be integrated. This needs to be done so that the infantry reacts appropriately to the vehicles, and that they can target and attack each other. This would involve adjusting the infantry AI system (or replacing it), which is a state machine.
• First Person Controller: Players can take direct control of infantry units using a first person shooter (FPS) system. I need to improve the existing basic FPS system to include more realistic features, movements, and visual effects. I have bought FPS assets from the Unity asset store, so this task could involve using some of the features from these assets and customizing them for the game.
Work Environment: This is a fully remote position, requiring a reliable computer capable of running Unity and a stable internet connection for frequent use of version control systems.
I have been working on the game as a solo developer for the past 3 years, so the position would primarily be helping me develop the game, although the publisher has level designers and artists who might join the development.
Application Process: Interested candidates should provide information on their relevant skills and experience, particularly highlighting any capabilities in handling the specific development tasks mentioned. While not all desirable skills are mandatory, a readiness to take on significant development roles is highly valued. Please also include your availability and if you can do part-time (3 days a week) or full-time (5 days a week), or either. The salary will be $17-21 an hour, depending on experience.
Thank you for your interest in this position.
