We are now inviting applications for a Tenure track position in Future Electricity and Flexibility Markets (Electrical Engineering)


The positions will be filled either as a fixed-term Assistant Professor or Associate Professor position within the Tenure track system, or as a permanent Professor position. The level is determined by the applicant's merits and career stage.


Background


The School of Technology and Innovations provides internationally recognized engineering and business education and research. The School's research strengths include computer vision, artificial intelligence methods, positioning technologies and systems, distributed automation systems, smart grids, quality and technology management, logistics, blockchain technology and flexible energy resources. The position supports the implementation of the University of Vaasa strategy 2030: Sustainable Business, Energy and Society and especially the ‘Energy Transition and Technology’ focus area.


Research in Electrical Engineering at the University of Vaasa is done in Smart Electric Systems (SES) research group which mission is to do research for low-carbon, secure, reliable and resilient integrated energy systems. In overall, the SES research group focuses on the electrical power engineering with practical applications of modern automation, information and communication technology.


Main research themes of the SES group are related to integration of flexible energy resources (DER hosting capacity / grid codes, energy storage and conversion Solutions, Integrated multi-energy systems and sector-coupling), power electronics (inverter control methods, DC/DC & DC/AC), smart grids (microgrids and energy communities, flexibility services provision for DSOs & TSOs, real-time / multi-time scale optimization), control, management & protection (active network management, virtualized / centralized protection, utilization of edge & cloud computing, fault detection and location, communication and cybersecurity in smart grids) and new electricity market structures.


Job description and requirements


For this position we are looking for a promising researcher in a strong upswing, with knowledge and skills particularly in the field of future electricity and flexibility markets that could support the holistic & cost-efficient transition towards renewables-based power systems and enable improved utilization flexibility from multiple different flexible energy resources, customer & sectors at all voltage levels (HV, MV and LV) for the TSOs system-wide and DSOs local flexibility needs in a coordinated manner supporting simultaneously also the whole power system resiliency.


The prospective candidate needs to have a PhD in the relevant field (electrical engineering / electrical energy engineering). The position requires strong expertise, knowledge and research experience about electricity and flexibility markets, role of TSO-DSO coordination and their needs, sector-integration (electricity, heat, gas/hydrogen, transportation), optimization and forecasting with AI-/ML-based methods. In addition, knowledge on microgrids, energy communities, smart cities, peer-to-peer markets, future dynamic network fees and blockchain technologies is considered as an advantage.


ln the position of Professor, practical non-academic experience in the field is not required but can be considered beneficial.


The tenure track position is research-oriented, but also include teaching and thesis supervision (MSc and doctoral level), applying for external research funding, and university administrative tasks. The annual working time is 1612 hours based on the general collective agreement for Finnish universities and tasks are agreed in more detail in the Annual Work Plan.

Salary and benefits

The salary is based on both the job requirement and the employee’s personal performance in accordance with the Finnish University Salary System (YPJ). The annual starting salary (incl. holiday contributions) is approximately


  • Assistant Professor: €51,500 - € 55,700
  • Associate Professor: €59,400 - € 64,200
  • Professor: €71,800 - € 87,500

  • Copies of no more than 10 publications that the applicant wishes to be taken into account when evaluating their competence and qualifications. The publications can, if needed, be merged into a maximum of 7 pdf-files.
