Application Security Engineer in PORTUGAL

We are looking for an experienced Application Security Engineer who is willing to relocate to join our team in Brussels, Belgium.

As an Application Security Engineer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the security of applications within the IT environment by providing expertise in code reviews, vulnerability management, and supporting IT development squads in adopting secure development practices. You will act as the bridge between security and development while helping teams embrace SecDevOps principles and enhancing application security across the organization.

Your Responsibilities

Primary Tasks

• Support IT Development Squads:
• Manage requests (via Jira) for setting up application security tooling.
• Conduct code reviews using SAST tools to identify and address vulnerabilities during the development process.
• Train and coach squads on using security tools, secure coding practices, and identifying common coding mistakes.
• Technical Infrastructure Management:
• Manage and maintain the infrastructure supporting automatic code reviews and open-source library evaluations.
• Ensure policies around security and compliance are up-to-date and effectively applied.
• Monitor and report on the execution of evaluations, and maintain clear incident documentation.
• Keep development guidelines current and aligned with security standards.
• Leadership and Expertise:
• Act as a security lead in implementing projects or changes within the team's scope.
• Collaborate with teams to provide technical security advice during project deliveries and secure software deployment.

Additional Tasks

• Manage security issues by informing responsible teams, monitoring resolution, and reporting progress.
• Support IT developers in identifying solutions for security risks and incidents.
• Provide input on new security measures and detection mechanisms to mitigate vulnerabilities.

Coding Work

• While not heavily focused on coding, you will use your technical expertise to write simple scripts to enhance or maintain security tooling as needed.

Your Profile

Technical Expertise

• Experience in application development with an up-to-date understanding of industry evolution, including programming languages, tools, and platforms.
• Proficiency with tools & platforms such as Jenkins, GitLab, Maven, and Docker.
• Interest in and some experience with penetration testing.
• Strong knowledge of network security fundamentals and mobile application development/testing challenges.

Skills & Competencies

• A strong interest in application security, with the ambition to become a seasoned expert within the next 3–5 years.
• Understanding of the software development lifecycle in Agile/DevOps environments, including security checks at all stages.
• Capacity to act as a leader and proactive problem solver, contributing actively to secure development practices across teams.

Education & Experience

• A Master's degree in IT or Engineering (for junior positions) OR equivalent experience for more senior profiles.
