Motion Twin is a cooperative company based in Bordeaux since 2001. Its mission is the design and development of video games, with their latest release being Windblown (currently in Early Access on Steam) and Dead Cells (Best Action Game - Game Awards 2018).
Motion Twin currently consists of 7 partners who oversee all aspects of the games developed, beyond their technical roles. Each partner has a strong impact on the direction of the projects and the company as a whole. For the development of Windblown, Motion Twin is looking for a Senior Technical Artist with strong programming skills and a strong artistic sensibility. Working closely with the rest of the team, this person will be primarily responsible for envisioning, architecting, implementing, and maintaining the graphical aspects of the game.
Due to our unique structure, our goal is also to find our next partner. Therefore, the role goes beyond technical responsibilities and requires an interest in all aspects of the position, such as other aspects of the game and the company's strategy. The candidate should be able to express themselves on a multitude of topics that extend beyond their basic areas of expertise and demonstrate initiative and autonomy in any domain.
Responsibilities:
- Define, architect, and implement the necessary tools and pipelines related to the graphical aspects of the project in Unity, in close collaboration with the art team, level designers, and engine programmers: VFXs & shaders, rendering, lightning & post-production, decoration systems and possibly animation & rigging processes.
- Maintain, debug and optimize these tools according to different constraints and/or platforms (PC, consoles, mobile), while preserving the artistic vision of the project.
- Determine graphics bottlenecks and optimize game performances
- Prototype, integrate and optimise VFX needs: textures, shaders, particle systems, lighting and post process
- Stay constantly up to date and be proactive in implementing solutions, being the reference point for technical matters related to visuals and animation.
- Plan and break down tasks according to collectively defined objectives.
- Show interest and take a position on topics beyond the current project (organization, company strategy, etc.)
Skills:
- Ability to identify artistic needs and choose appropriate technical solutions.
- Strong skills in creating and integrating tools using Unity, with an understanding of tools used at the beginning and end of the production pipeline.
- Capability to develop and maintain these tools to make them accessible to the art team.
- Ability to propose new technical solutions.
- Solid artistic foundation (composition, lighting, color theory) to understand and interpret the needs of the art team.
- Excellent knowledge of Unity, C#, and the URP pipeline.
- Proficiency in shaders, ShaderGraph, and an associated language (HLSL, ShaderLab, etc.).
- Proficiency in a 3D software (Houdini, 3DSMax, Maya, Blender, etc.).
- Familiarity with 2D software (Substance Designer and Painter, Photoshop).
- Attention to polish and detail.
Candidate Profile:
- French and English-speaking.
- At least 5 years of professional experience in a game studio.
- Participation in the creation of at least two commercially released games.
- Strong artistic sensibility and curiosity.
- Autonomy and good communication skills.
- Proactive and able to make proposals.
- Curiosity and willingness to step out of your comfort zone.
- Enjoy learning new skills (even beyond technical ones).
- Constructively critical of your own work and that of others.
- Experience and willingness to work in a team.
Additional Information:
- Full-time permanent position (35 hours/week).
- Possibility to request partner status (equal rights with other partners regarding salary, voting rights in assemblies, and distribution of profits in case of benefits).
- Location: remote work (part-time or 100%) with possibility of co-working, from mainland France. If you are currently located elsewhere, assistance with relocation and/or a 6-month remote work period from your current location is possible (details to be confirmed together).
