We are seeking a highly skilled Operational/System Engineer with expertise in Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS) and Istio Service Mesh willing to relocate and join our Client's team in Brussels, Belgium.
The ideal candidate should have a strong background in managing and optimizing Kubernetes environments and a proven track record of implementing and maintaining Istio-based service meshes. This is a unique opportunity to work with a talented team of architects and engineers, contribute to an exciting cloud migration project, and help design and support critical cloud-based solutions for a large IT environment.
Key Responsibilities:
- Work collaboratively with technical architects and operational engineers to assist with the setup and automation of a shared Azure Kubernetes environment.
- Automate deployment processes and integrate various applications into the AKS platform using Istio Service Mesh.
- Deploy and configure Istio to interconnect hundreds of microservices while ensuring seamless integration with Azure resources, on-premises systems, and external applications.
- Collaborate with an external contractor, validate architecture decisions, and define solutions and technical standards.
- Ensure the platform is robust, manageable, secure, and well-documented.
- Provide support and guidance to development teams migrating to Azure Cloud and help ensure smooth integration into the service mesh.
- Train operational teams to use the platform, assist with installations in higher environments, and help debug and resolve issues.
Required Skills and Experience:
- At least 5 years of experience as a System Engineer or Operational Engineer in managing IT systems.
- Strong background in Azure Kubernetes (AKS) cluster management and optimization.
- Proven expertise in Istio Service Mesh, including deployment, configuration, and management in large-scale IT environments.
- Deep knowledge of Kubernetes architecture, including its components (e.g., API Server, etcd, and Controllers).
- Hands-on experience with containerization technologies such as Docker and related operational tasks.
- Strong understanding of Azure Identity Management and Access Control principles.
- Proficiency in scripting languages such as Bash, Python, PowerShell, or Bicep.
- Familiarity with Azure CLI and other automation tools in the Azure ecosystem.
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines and tools such as GitHub, GitLab, or Azure DevOps.
- Advanced skills in ArgoCD and Helm for configuration management and application deployment.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities with strong debugging and troubleshooting skills.
- Outstanding communication and collaboration skills to work effectively within a diverse and distributed team.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Certifications in Kubernetes (CKA, CKAD) or Microsoft Azure (AZ-104, AZ-303).
- Security Certification on Azure (e.g., AZ-1002, AZ-1003).
- Exposure to other service mesh solutions such as Linkerd or Consul.
- Experience with monitoring tools like Dynatrace and logging tools like Splunk.
- Familiarity with cloud-native security practices and security tools.
