Senior Backend Engineer - Large Model Assistant (All Genders)
About The Role
As a senior backend engineer in our Zalando Assistant team, you’ll be part of a cross functional motivated team of engineers and will be working closely with Applied Scientists, Product Managers and Design Specialists. Zalando Assistant, Zalando’s LLM-based assistant, is a helpful shopping assistant that removes roadblocks on customers' journeys so that they can find the relevant products and get inspired.
You will play a crucial role in enhancing the future search and browse experience for Zalando's 50 million customers across 28 countries.

- You will be part of a cross functional engineering team that builds the future of retail experience by leveraging large models and other state-of-the-art machine learning models.
- You communicate with various stakeholders to understand the business context, and translate the requirements into technical designs.
- You act like an owner by taking up a challenge, working towards reducing ambiguity, and breaking the work down into manageable tasks for the team.
- You establish trust and technical excellence beyond the team and collaborate with other internal product and technical teams to build scalable systems which integrate into the larger context of Zalando
- You continuously improve the performance of our systems, and your skill set as a software engineer and share knowledge with your colleagues.
WE’D LOVE TO MEET YOU IF
- You consistently demonstrate an entrepreneurial, analytical, and customer-centric approach, and you have an insatiable desire to improve the experience for our customers.
- You are proficient in developing large-scale applications with JVM-based (Java, Scala, Kotlin). Scala or Python is a plus.
- With the nature of this problem space, we are looking for someone that has demonstrated deep interest in generative AI & large models.
- You have experience in all parts of the software development life cycle: building, testing, deploying, and operating in production.
- You have experience with REST APIs design and event-driven architectures
- You communicate effectively in English and are comfortable collaborating with different product, design, and engineering teams.
