Founding Engineer in UNITED STATES

CarefulAI is building the first automated associate. Rather than conversing with a general purpose chatbot, attorneys use CarefulAI to execute complex task pipelines to deliver finished work product. Under the hood, the Careful Associate has, or will have, semantically indexed domain-specific datasets, integrations with common touch points outside the firm, fine-tuned models to write practice-specific documents, and specialized prompt libraries and RAG systems for multi-step legal tasks. Starting in the $50B patent law sub-sector because of our team’s relationships and the sub-sector's ripeness for automation, we’ve built an MVP that automates two key patent litigation workflows and are currently validating the reliability of its work product in trials at two top 5 Am Law 100 firms, as well as a handful of smaller firms, solo practitioners, and in-house counsel.

As a founding engineer at CarefulAI, you will play a key part in developing an effective, hybrid research/engineering org from the ground up. You will work closely with both technical founders to imagine and implement how attorneys will interact with automated task agents.

The role will begin remote and transition to an in-person role in NYC this summer. In NYC, we will operate a hybrid model, with 3 days a week in office.

• Build and evaluate patent search engines
• Build scaleable data acquisition infrastructure
• Design and execute LLM fine-tuning experiments
• Spec and implement customer-facing features with significant input from design partners
• Consistently implement and maintain engineering and dev ops best practices

• Experience taking complex features from design spec to release
• Experience training and evaluating ML models and search systems
• Engineering maturity and understanding of scaleable dev ops
• Familiarity with AWS, GCP, docker, and Kubernetes
• Comfortability working closely with design partners to deliver generalizable solutions

• Extensive experience training and serving ML models
• Practical understanding of and experience with SFT and RLHF processes
• Experience leading a team of 3+ engineers

$200,000 - $270,000 with equity compensation ranging from 1.0% - 3.0%. Relocation bonus in an amount depending on your current location for those who need to move to NYC. Comprehensive health, dental, and vision coverage.

4. 2 day paid project working directly with at least one of the founders in person. Choose one of {SF, NYC} and choose one of {[Friday, Saturday], [Sunday, Monday], [Weekday, Weekday]}. We’ll fly you out and put you up in a hotel.
