As a Data Scientist in the Auction team, you'll be responsible for designing and developing trivago’s two-sided marketplace that connects travelers with hotels worldwide. This involves working on ML algorithms which produce billions of predictions per day. Your statistical analyses will provide recommendations that play a pivotal role in shaping trivago’s product. In particular, your analyses will support team decisions on how to continuously improve our existing auction model, help advertisers optimize their marketing campaigns, and minimize their risk on our platform. If this sounds like your next role, apply today!

How you’ll make an impact:

  • Develop and optimize algorithms to maintain a fair and healthy marketplace. For example, we build models for: user click-through-rate, determining advertiser rate accuracy, and for setting the auction reserve price
  • Closely collaborate with the auction backend engineering team and other stakeholders to ensure the seamless operation of trivago’s marketplace and display the best deals for our users
  • Analyze petabytes of data to discover hypothesis about new product features and understand long-term trends in trivago’s marketplace
  • Create statistical models to establish causal relationships between different components in our marketplace. Design experiments, conduct and analyze A/B tests
  • Develop metrics that measure the accuracy and fairness of our ML models to ensure great hotel search experience for our users while ensuring a healthy and competitive marketplace

Some topics you’ll be working on:

  • How to improve our ML algorithms that leverage trivago’s rich data on hotel prices and deploy low-latency models to find the best deals for our users
  • The causal impact of our algorithmic changes on trivago’s users and marketplace dynamics
  • The advantages and disadvantages of different auction-based allocation and payment mechanisms
  • How to improve the statistical tools and methods used to test novel product features and reduce the runtime of experiments

What you'll need to thrive:

  • Minimum 2 years' hands-on experience in an analytics-related field
  • An exceptional understanding of data analysis and statistics with experience working with both in either an academic or professional context
  • Excellent communication skills and confidence in presenting ideas to stakeholders with the right level of detail
  • Proficiency in programming in one statistical scripting language e.g. Python, R; experience working with SQL
  • A firm belief that excellent data science requires a thorough understanding, meticulousness, and attention to detail

  • Fluency in English (our company language)

Stand out with:

  • A PhD in a quantitative field
  • A background in either machine learning, econometrics, or causal inference
  • Experience working with cloud technologies and building production-level machine learning models
  • Experience with Bayesian statistics and probabilistic programming in Stan or PyMC
