Aquila is pioneering dynamic, wireless optical energy networking to power sectors underserved by traditional grid infrastructure. We're backed by top investors (Blackbird, Possible, and Icehouse) and collaborating with industry-leading partners to create innovative energy-transformation solutions. At Aquila, we believe in pushing the boundaries of possibility through teamwork, innovation, and world-class engineering.
As a Senior Mechanical Engineer at Aquila, you will take ownership of the design and development of mechanical systems that enable long-range, wireless power transfer. Your work will focus on integrating and optimising mechanical hardware for our groundbreaking Lightway energy networking system. This includes hardware solutions for the Lightway Sentry—our drone-based optical power-beaming product, built for indefinite flight and designed to transform homeland security, emergency response, and defence.
Responsibilities:
- Own mechanical systems' design, prototyping, and integration for dynamic, long-range energy transfer.
- Develop and execute validation plans for critical mechanical components, including structural, modal, and dynamic analysis.
- Ensure all designs are optimized for manufacturability and assembly (DFM/DFA).
- Collaborate with external suppliers to streamline manufacturing processes and build relationships for procurement.
- Lead projects from initial development through testing, production, and sustainment, using first principles to drive decision-making.
- Support junior engineers and contribute to Aquila’s broader hardware strategy in a fast-paced, collaborative environment.
Qualifications:
- Proven expertise in designing and building actuated mechanical systems, with experience in motor and actuator selection, transmission design, and prototype fabrication.
- Strong skills in structural analysis, thermal analysis, fluid dynamics, and the use of CAE tools such as Solidworks/Onshape and Ansys.
- Demonstrated experience developing robust mechanical components for production in electromechanical assemblies.
- Ability to design and test products for rugged environments, with experience in aerospace, defense, or maritime sectors preferred.
- Basic understanding of firmware and software development, and a strong ability to work across teams and with external vendors.
- Experience leading projects from concept to production with a deep understanding of the mechanical engineering lifecycle.
