Position Overview:

BTI is excited to grow our electrical design and engineering team!


We are seeking a skilled and highly motivated Electrical Engineer with background and expertise in industrial facility electrical systems design, power systems design, control systems design, and control system implementation. The role is responsible to lead, mentor, and review the electrical team who are designing, developing, and maintaining electrical systems and components to the required industry and customer specifications.

Our Electrical Engineering Manager and experienced project managers provide mentorship to develop and grow the technical and management competencies required to excel. The individual must provide the drive and enthusiasm to learn and the strength of character to work hard both independently and as part of a team.


This is a full-time role that requires on-site presence in our Calgary office, with some flexibility to work remotely based on team agreements and project requirements.


Responsibilities:

The list below provides typical responsibilities and activities of professionals across the various subjects in the Electrical group at Beta-Tech. As a senior team member, you are expected to be highly proficient at most of these activities and be able to lead project delivery.

  • Electrical System Design: Design electrical systems for industrial facilities, including power distribution, lighting, cable routing, hazardous area classification, grounding, and lightning protection systems. Specify electrical components, devices, and equipment based on project requirements, performance criteria, and industry standards. Prepare construction work packages, specifications, and reports detailing electrical designs and system implementations.
  • Power System Design: Build single line and three-line diagrams, develop power distribution layouts, and specify equipment for power generation, distribution, and control. Perform calculations for load analysis, voltage drop, and short circuit analysis. Develop system models in ETAP and produce power system reports.
  • Control System Design: Create panel layouts, bills of materials, power distribution schematics, loop drawings, and connection diagrams for control system panels and control network racks. Perform cabinet heating and cooling calculations, develop load lists, and reference customer specifications in the design effort. Specify and select electrical and automation components, devices, and equipment based on project requirements, performance criteria, and industry standards.
  • Control System Implementation: Collaborate with control system engineers to integrate electrical systems with automation and control systems, ensuring seamless operation and functionality. Prepare construction work packages, specifications, and reports detailing electrical designs and system implementations.
  • Electrical Construction and Maintenance: Prepare construction scope and work packages, specifications, and reports detailing electrical designs and system implementations. Provide technical support during construction, commissioning, and operation phases. Troubleshoot electrical issues and recommend solutions to optimize system performance.


In addition, the role requires the following abilities:

  • Technical Leadership: Direct drafters, designers, and other team members in the creation and revision of technical drawings and documents.
  • Project Planning and Execution: Participate in project planning, scheduling, and execution activities with project managers, engineers, and other stakeholders. Collaborate with project managers to ensure timely delivery of high-quality solutions within budgetary constraints.
  • Compliance and Safety: Ensure electrical designs comply with relevant codes, standards, and regulations. Conduct risk assessments and implement safety measures to mitigate hazards.


Qualifications:

The qualifications and aptitudes of the successful candidate include:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
  • Registered as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with APEGA.
  • Expert understanding of electrical systems, components, and design concepts.
  • Ten plus years of experience in electrical design for industrial facilities, with a focus on power systems and control system integration.
  • Deep knowledge of electrical codes, standards, and regulations (e.g., CEC, Alberta Standata).
  • Extensive experience with hardware for industrial automation and control systems (e.g., PLCs, SCADA).
  • Previous project work with power distribution equipment, switchgear, transformers, and motor controls.
  • Excellent communication skills and ability to collaborate effectively with multidisciplinary teams.
  • High degree of attention to detail.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for project site visits and client meetings.
  • Aptitude to learn quickly and ability to work independently.
  • Enjoyment of and talent with troubleshooting and problem solving.
  • Effective in fast paced and stressful situations.
  • Willing, able, and past success with mentoring junior and intermediate team members.


Compensation

Beta-Tech compensates work on an hourly basis. The hourly wage is commensurate with competency, relevant experience, and your positive contributions to the organization. We offer employees paid vacation and an excellent extended health benefits policy.
