(Nakina Lumber), a subsidiary of the Buchanan group of companies, is a fully functioning lumber mill, manufacturing finished lumber products from trees harvested from the Ogoki Forest. Position Overview:
Reporting to the General Manager, the Human Resources (HR) Manager manages across the employee life cycle, oversees day-to-day human resource needs of the Company and works in partnership with the management team to plan for future human resource needs. The HR Manager manages Company attendance, employee disability, abilities in the workplace, WSIB and return-to-work activities. Additionally, the HR Manager provides leadership and supports the management team in supporting employees for success within their roles, plays a key role in the Company’s health and safety program and is the Company’s key point of contact for the union and labour relations. The Human Resources Manager manages the Company’s social media presence, utilizing the various platforms to support recruitment efforts, promote Company culture and highlight northern living.
Responsibilities:
· To work collaboratively with the General Manager in the identification of human resource needs so as to support the attainment of business objectives.
· To support the engagement, development and retention of the ‘right people’ with the ‘right skills’ and the ‘right motivation’.
· To maintain a database of current positions available, ensuring position descriptions are up-to-date and compliant with all relevant legislation and the Collective Agreement, and ensuring available positions are publicly and strategically posted.
· To provide a community and regional presence at career fairs, representing the Company and generating interest in employment with the Company.
· To manage human resource operations, across the employee life cycle, inclusive of recruitment, onboarding, ongoing development, performance management and termination, as required.
· To ensure an Equity, Inclusion, Diversity and Anti-Racism (EIDA-R) approach is applied throughout the employee life cycle and on a day-to-day basis, across the Company.
· To manage disability leaves and WSIB claims and provide leadership around return-to-work plans.
· To prepare, update and implement Human Resource programs, policies and procedures.
· To ensure the Human Resource Information System (HRIS) is kept up-to-date.
· To remain current and to provide in-house expertise around Employment Standards, the Labour Relations Act and Human Rights and any other relevant legislation.
· To provide support to Supervisors around conflict resolution within and across teams.
· To support Supervisors with the performance management process, ensuring timely and meaningful reviews so as to support employee success within their roles.
· To work collaboratively with the management team to facilitate and support a healthy Company culture.
· To participate as a management representative on the Joint Health & Safety Committee (JHSC), providing leadership and support around legislative compliance and ensuring alignment and integration of health and safety policies and procedures and human resource policies and procedures.
· To identify opportunity for further development of the staff and employee teams and coordinate training to address the same.
· To be the Company liaison with the Union and to provide leadership around grievance resolution and broader labour relations; to participate in and provide leadership around contract negotiation.
· To work closely with the department responsible for payroll and benefits administration, ensuring accuracy in pay and benefits entitlement for employees and staff.
· To provide supervision and support for the Employee Relations Coordinator and any additional roles that may be considered part of the human resources department.
· To (co)-facilitate employee training, with groups of varying size.
· To field requests and inquiries from employees on a daily basis, around such things as payroll, PPE issuance, etc.
· To address concerns directly with the appropriate supervisor, in a timely manner, and to support problem solving around the concern(s) brought forward.
· To conduct oneself in a manner that contributes to a culturally safe, inclusive and respectful workplace.
· Other duties as may be assigned from time-to-time.
· To reliably attend work for scheduled shifts.
Qualifications:
· Completion of a Degree or Diploma program in human resources or business administration preferred.
· CHRP or CHRL an asset.
· A minimum of two (2) years relevant human resource experience, preferably in an industrial or manufacturing setting.
· Knowledgeable around and experience applying legislation such as the Employment Standards Act, the Human Rights Act, the Accessibility for all Ontarians Act, Occupational Health and Safety Act, etc.
· Experience working in a unionized environment.
· Experience managing disability and WSIB leaves/claims and return-to-work plans.
· Experience in group facilitation and/or the provision of training for groups of varying size.
· Experience providing supervision and support for individuals and teams, with such teams being multi-disciplinary in nature, being an asset.
· Experience in and comfort in liaising with community/community partners.
· Experience managing company social media platforms an asset.
· Proficient in Microsoft Office.
· Ability to learn and confidently work within databases/Human Resource Information Systems (HRIS).
· Extremely detail oriented.
· Ability to effectively and respectfully establish professional boundaries with employees with whom there may be a dual relationship.
· Ability to work independently and complete assigned tasks, with minimal supervision.
· Receptive and responsive to receiving direction and supervision.
· Access to a personal vehicle and valid driver’s license required.
· An ability to commit to reliable and consistent attendance.
· A strong work ethic.
· An understanding of the impacts of intergenerational trauma in the indigenous community and an understanding of culturally relevant approaches in employee engagement.
· Ability to speak French as asset.
· An ability to focus in a loud environment, surrounded by lots of activity.
· An ability to lift up to 25 pounds.
· An ability to climb stairs.
