R&D Electronics Engineer (Embedded Systems & Validation)

About the role

Our client develops next-generation electronic detonator systems for the global mining industry. We're looking for an R&D Electronics Engineer to join the team, focused on the testing, validation, and technology exploration behind our digital and analogue detonator designs.

This isn't a design role. It is for someone who is both passionate about Embedded systems and Electronics and wants to combine both, for someone who loves testing, experimental validation, and investigative research. You'll dig into our current ASIC-based products to understand how they behave in the field and on the production line, and scout emerging technologies that could shape the products we build next.

• Full time, permanent contract. No car
• Onsite in Heverlee (hybrid or fully remote is not possible)
• Small nerdy team, you will work together with one the best embedded and electronics engineers in Belgium
• We are looking for 2 engineers to join, a medior/senior and a junior. Fresh graduates are welcome to apply too, if you are eager to learn and you passion is electronics and embedded.
• Relocation from other countries is supported.

What you'll do:

Work on improvement of an ASIC-based system:

• Develop and run test strategies to validate hardware and digital designs across FPGA platforms and embedded systems - with a focus on hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) testing, safety logic, and precise timing verification.
• Build and maintain testbenches to evaluate firing-pulse characteristics, delay accuracy, and system reliability under varied environmental and operating conditions.
• Analyse existing ASIC-based detonator products to understand their performance, safety features, and energy-storage behaviour.
• Monitor production data to catch hidden flaws and manufacturing inconsistencies, particularly around the ASIC in every detonator.
• Research and benchmark emerging technologies, methods, and components, and run feasibility studies on new concepts.
• Document test methodologies, research findings, and evaluation data to support data-driven decisions and safety/regulatory compliance.
• Collaborate with global suppliers, and follow our development safety processes (FMEA, HARA, HAZOP).

The role includes international travel to research institutes and partners, including innovations in electronics events, plus mine-site visits to understand blasting practices first-hand.

What you'll bring

• Bachelor's degree in Electrical/Electronic Engineering/Embedded systems or equivalent.
• 2+ years' experience in analogue and digital circuit design.

• 2+ years' firmware development in C.
• Strong background in hardware verification, digital design validation, and hands-on testing and debugging.
• Confidence with lab equipment - oscilloscopes, high-voltage probes, logic analysers, and automated test environments (LabVIEW in particular).
• Strong analytical and technical-writing skills (test plans, specs, validation reports).
• Fluent English, sharp attention to detail, and a genuine appetite for problem-solving.

Nice to have

• Altium Designer PCB experience
• Software development experience
• Experience analysing integrated circuits, reverse-engineering behaviour, or benchmark-testing existing systems
