Job Description

Position Summary

The Sr Quality Engineer will support the Clouded Leopard program within IDEXX's enterprise environment. This is a hands-on quality engineering role focused primarily on manual, exploratory, and functional testing across a complex, distributed application ecosystem.

The Quality Engineer will work directly with the development team throughout the software development lifecycle, from story refinement and requirements discussions through testing and final acceptance. The role requires someone who can independently explore workflows, identify edge cases, validate front-end behavior against backend activity, and investigate issues through APIs, logs, integrations, errors, and system events.

This is not an automation-focused QA Engineer or SDET position. Test automation is primarily owned and developed by the software development team. The Quality Engineer may review existing automated tests, validate test assertions, and collaborate with developers on what should be automated, but the primary responsibility is manual, exploratory, and functional testing.

Candidates with LIMS (Laboratory Information Management System) experience are especially desirable.

Key Responsibilities

  • Design and execute manual, exploratory, and functional testing based on user stories, requirements, workflows, and system behavior.
  • Independently explore application workflows to identify defects, edge cases, and issues that scripted testing may not uncover.
  • Validate application functionality through the user interface while verifying corresponding backend activity.
  • Test and validate APIs, integrations, logs, errors, and system events.
  • Investigate failures beyond simply identifying that something does not work.
  • Review existing automated tests and assertions when appropriate.
  • Collaborate with developers to identify appropriate opportunities for test automation.
  • Participate throughout the software development lifecycle, including story refinement, requirements discussions, testing, and final acceptance.
  • Develop a strong understanding of complex laboratory and business workflows.
  • Understand upstream and downstream dependencies and test applications from the perspective of the actual end user.
  • Troubleshoot complex application behavior and help determine potential root causes.
  • Clearly communicate and document defects with specific examples and supporting technical information.
  • Collaborate closely with software developers, technical business analysts, product owners, and other stakeholders.
  • Participate actively in requirements and refinement discussions.
  • Perform testing across multiple stories, features, and workflows within a large application ecosystem.
  • Review existing application code and automated test coverage when necessary.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of quality engineering and testing practices.

Minimum Experience

  • Senior-level Quality Engineering, QA, or software testing experience.
  • Strong hands-on experience with manual, exploratory, and functional testing.
  • Experience independently designing and executing tests based on requirements, user stories, workflows, and system behavior.
  • Experience validating both UI/front-end functionality and backend behavior.
  • Experience with technical troubleshooting and defect investigation.
  • Experience working with APIs, logs, integrations, errors, or system events.
  • Experience working closely with software developers and cross-functional technical teams.
  • Ability to investigate complex application behavior and identify defects beyond predefined test scripts.
