Job Description

Shiitake Creative is building a roster of trusted freelance designers we can call on for project-based work. We work across web design, UX design, print design, and branding for a wide range of clients, from tourism bureaus and government agencies to private businesses. When we're at capacity or need a specific skill set for a project, we'll reach out to designers in our network who are the right fit.

This isn't a single role with one set of responsibilities — it's an open call to build relationships with designers we can trust, work with regularly, and bring in as projects come up.

We're looking for designers with experience in (one or more):

• Print Designers (especially brochures and marketing collateral)
• Web Designers
• UI/UX Designers
• Branding Designers

Responsibilities

• Proven experience in at least one of the above design areas
• Proficiency in relevant design software (Adobe Creative Suite, Figma, etc., depending on specialty)
• Based in Japan preferred, but open to remote collaboration from other locations
• Portfolio of past work required
• Experience working with Japanese copy/typography is a plu
  
  

Qualifications

This is an open call for freelance designers with a professional graphic design background and a strong sense of craft.

• Professional experience: You have professional graphic design experience and a portfolio of work.
• Strong design fundamentals: You are proficient in Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, and InDesign. You have strong conceptual thinking, with advanced skills in typography, color, and print design. You have knowledge of print production and preparing artwork for printing.
• Experience designing for the Japanese market: Your portfolio includes work for the Japanese market, with Japanese text and typography, and demonstrates consideration toward aesthetic, behavioral, and cultural factors. Experience at a Japan-based company is a plus.
• Language and cultural skills: Business fluency in Japanese and/or English. Candidates with JLPT N2 level or above are preferred.
• Communication: You communicate clearly and proactively, respond promptly, and can manage your own timeline without hand-holding.
• Creative with commercial awareness: You're flexible and think outside the box, but you're also deadline-aware and comfortable working within established brand guidelines.
• Openness: You take feedback well and deliver work that serves the brief.

Shiitake Creative is a Tokyo-based bilingual creative content company founded in 2021. We help our Japanese clients brand themselves for an international audience, and help our overseas clients reach the right audience in Japan. While not exclusive to travel, it's where we spend most of our time — regional tourism bureaus, agencies, and private companies make up a large share of our clients. We also run the annual Japan Travel Awards.
