Job Description


What You Will Do

At Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), we solve national security challenges through simultaneous excellence! The Plutonium Capability Transuranic Waste Management group, Nuclear Process Infrastructure-6 (NPI-6) is looking for a highly motivated individual to serve as a Data Scientist to join our team. NPI-6 ensures safe, efficient, and compliant waste management generated at the TA-55 Plutonium Facility, the Chemistry and Metallurgy Research (CMR) building, the TA-50 Radioactive Liquid Waste Treatment Facility (RLWTF), and the Radiological Laboratory Utility Office Building (RLUOB). Within this scope, the Data Team provides metric tracking, research and analysis, and custom software products to facilitate group operations. As part of this team, there are ample opportunities to learn new skillsets, and we maintain a supportive environment when challenges arise. Data Scientist 1 ($96,600 - $158,000)

At this level, you will:

  • Assist with collaborative projects to advance throughput of waste characterization.
  • Take responsibility for understanding tasks and own contributions to deliverables.
  • Set direction and goals for assigned tasks and manage your own assignments.
  • Contribute to internal reports and presentations, build data pipelines, visualize data, and improve information flow processes.

Data Scientist 2 ($106,400 - $176,000)

In addition to the responsibilities listed above, at this level you will:

  • Contribute to medium to large scale proposals, and the development of intellectual property leading to copyrights or patents, journal papers and/or technical reports.
  • Set individual and/or team direction and goals for well-defined tasks within a project.
  • Develop innovative advanced concepts, theories, methods, techniques, and approaches to address specialized problems, expanding on existing efforts or establishing novel research directions such as innovations in waste packaging safety/efficiency.
  • Use project assignments to further organizational goals by developing and implementing project management plans, including scope, schedule, and budget for small to moderate projects and/or major project tasks.

What You Need

Minimum Job Requirements:

Computing: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in one or more of the following technical disciplines: script coding (ex. Python, SQL, bash), data engineering, data analysis and visualization, statistics, web application development. Familiarity with Windows and Linux operating systems.

Collaboration: Demonstrated ability to thrive in a highly collaborative environment, demonstrating strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work across disciplines.

Methodology Development: Demonstrated knowledge and experience in developing and implementing technical research and development of projects, including the formulation and test of hypotheses, investigation of alternate solutions and recommendation of solutions to technical problems.

Communication: Ability to communicate safety, security, and quality assurance practices for the work assignment, including ability to formulate, document and present results to non-technical and technical audiences through written and spoken communication.

Leadership: Experience planning, directing and executing technical projects.

Mentorship: Experience mentoring junior staff, peers, students.

Education/Experience at lower level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 2 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Education/Experience at higher level: Position requires a Bachelor's degree in a STEM field from an accredited college or university and 4 years of relevant experience or an equivalent combination of education and experience directly related to the occupation.

Desired Qualifications:

Work Location: The work location for this position is onsite and located in Los Alamos, NM. All work locations are at the discretion of management.

Position commitment: Regular appointment employees are required to serve a period of continuous service in their current position to be eligible to apply for posted jobs throughout the Laboratory. If an employee has not served the time required, they may only apply for Laboratory jobs with the documented approval of their Division Leader. The position commitment for this position is 1 year.

Additional Details

Directive 206.2 - Employment with Triad requires a favorable decision by NNSA indicating employee is suitable under NNSA Supplemental Directive 206.2. Clearance: Q (Position will be cleared to this level). Selected applicants will be subject to a background investigation conducted by or on behalf of the Federal Government, and must meet eligibility requirements* for access to classified matter. This position requires a Q clearance. and obtaining such clearance requires US Citizenship except in extremely rare circumstances. Dependent upon the position, additional authorization to access classified information may be required, which may or may not be available to dual citizens. Receipt of a Q clearance and additional access authorization ultimately is a decision of the Federal Government and not of Triad.

  • Eligibility requirements: To obtain a clearance, an individual must be at least 18 years of age; U.S. citizenship is required except in very limited circumstances. See DOE Order 472.2 for additional information.

New-Employment Drug Test: The Laboratory requires successful applicants to complete a new-employment drug test and maintains a substance abuse policy that includes random drug testing. Although New Mexico and other states have legalized the use of marijuana, use and possession of marijuana remain illegal under federal law. A positive drug test for marijuana will result in termination of employment, even if the use was pre-offer.
