The Opportunity

Quality is critical for a health platform that millions of people rely on to track their activity, earn rewards, and stay engaged. As GoJoe grows across the US enterprise market, we’re looking for a QA Automation Engineer who thinks like an engineer, not a manual tester: someone who builds automation and tooling, understands the product deeply, and designs test scenarios that go well beyond the happy path - covering edge cases, failure modes, and the ways real users and real devices misbehave.

This is a high-impact role in a small, remote-first engineering team, with real ownership of QA strategy and test automation from day one.

The Role

As QA Automation Engineer, you'll build and own the automated testing infrastructure across the GoJoe platform - covering the iOS/Android apps (React Native / Expo), backend APIs, and the wearable and health-data integrations that power challenges and points. You'll go deep on the product to design test scenarios that cover real-world edge cases and failure modes, not just the happy path, and you'll write the automation and tooling that catches regressions before they reach users.

This is a hands-on, code-first role working closely with product, design, and the wider development team in a remote-first environment.

What you’ll do

• Own test strategy – define test plans and scenarios that go beyond the happy path, covering edge cases, failure modes, and real-world misuse across mobile, backend, and integrations
• Build automation – design and build automated test suites and tooling (UI, API, and integration) as first-class engineering work, embedded in CI/CD
• Test the full journey – validate end-to-end flows across app, backend, and wearable/health-data integrations
• Catch the hard bugs – design and automate regression, edge-case, and cross-device/OS coverage (iOS, Android, multiple versions, our React Native/Expo app), grounded in a deep understanding of the product
• Safeguard data accuracy – verify activity tracking, points scoring, and reward logic are correct and fair
• Champion quality – triage and root-cause defects, own release sign-off, and build the tooling and processes that solve recurring quality problems
• Work cross-functionally – collaborate async with product, design, and developers; write clear, reproducible bug reports
• Support performance & security – contribute to performance, load, and basic security testing where needed

Who You Are

You think like an engineer, not a manual tester: you'd rather build a script or a tool than repeat the same check by hand, and you care about why something breaks, not just that it did. You understand the product deeply enough to know where things are likely to go wrong, and you design test scenarios well beyond the happy path - edge cases, failure modes, and how real users and real devices actually misbehave. You communicate clearly, work well autonomously in a remote-first team, and use AI tools to work smarter and faster.

What We’re Looking For

Essential

• Experience – 3+ years in QA or software engineering, with a strong track record of building test automation rather than only executing manual test cases
• Engineering mindset – comfortable writing code (e.g. JavaScript/TypeScript or Python) to build tests, tools, and scripts, not just following test scripts
• Test automation – hands-on experience building and maintaining automation frameworks (e.g. Cypress, Playwright, Selenium, Appium, or Detox)
• Mobile & backend testing – experience automating tests for mobile apps (iOS/Android, ideally React Native/Expo) and backend/REST APIs
• CI/CD – familiarity integrating automated tests into CI/CD pipelines
• Product & edge-case thinking – strong ability to understand the product deeply and design test scenarios that go well beyond the happy path
• Communication – clear written communicator who thrives in a distributed, async-first team

Preferred

• Wearables / health data – experience testing device integrations or health/activity data
• Performance & security – exposure to performance/load testing or security-testing basics
• Domain – interest or background in health, fitness, or wellbeing products
• Data & compliance – familiarity with GDPR, HIPAA, or ISO 27001 considerations
