The Allen Institute is seeking a highly skilled DevOps Engineer III to join its dynamic team. This pivotal role involves ensuring that the institute’s data infrastructure and services are secure, reliable, and cost-efficient. The successful candidate will work closely with scientific teams managing petascale biological datasets, supporting data sharing in accordance with FAIR (Findable, Accessible, Interoperable, Reusable) standards. The DevOps Engineer will be responsible for deploying, monitoring, and maintaining core systems across cloud and on-premise environments, developing automation pipelines, and enhancing system observability. The ideal candidate will possess a strong background in cloud infrastructure, containerization, and automation, playing a key role in building sustainable, scalable architecture that supports the long-term research goals of the institute.

Qualifications

Applicants should hold a Bachelor’s degree in computer science or a related field, or an equivalent combination of education and experience. A minimum of three years of relevant experience in DevOps or related roles is required. The candidate should demonstrate advanced knowledge of containerization and orchestration frameworks, experience deploying applications at scale in cloud environments, and proficiency with observability and telemetry tools. Familiarity with secrets management, authentication, and authorization frameworks is essential, along with strong scripting skills in Python and Bash. Experience working with Linux operating systems is also required. Preferred qualifications include an advanced degree, AWS professional certifications (such as S3, ECS, EC2), experience deploying Docker containers on Kubernetes, and familiarity with Infrastructure as Code tools like Terraform or AWS CDK. Additional desirable skills include deploying authentication frameworks like SSO and SAML, automating workflows with GitHub Actions, and deploying monitoring tools such as Grafana and logging servers.

Responsibilities

The DevOps Engineer III will be responsible for deploying and monitoring core services across cloud and on-premises data centers, ensuring high availability and security. They will implement authentication and authorization layers for services and APIs to safeguard data access. Building and deploying dashboards for system health monitoring and telemetry will be a key task, providing visibility into infrastructure performance. The role also involves designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines to streamline application deployment and updates, as well as developing end-to-end testing infrastructure for data processing pipelines to ensure data integrity and system reliability. Collaborating with scientific and technical teams, the engineer will help optimize infrastructure workflows, automate routine tasks, and improve overall system resilience. The role requires proactive problem-solving, continuous improvement of infrastructure practices, and adherence to best security and operational standards.
