The Role:

Are you a recent graduate or junior mechanical design engineer eager to join a dynamic team? Our team in Portland is expanding and seeking a talented, enthusiastic engineer to work on innovative projects. You'll play a pivotal part in the full product development lifecycle, from concept to market, focusing on the defence sector. Collaborate with electronic and software engineers on designing, prototyping, and testing cutting-edge products. Responsibilities include creating data packs, building first-of-type products, quality control, testing, and production support.

Join us in developing robust, safety-critical equipment for military applications across Land, Maritime, and Underwater domains. Ensure our products perform reliably in challenging environments with your understanding of durable and ergonomic design principles. We offer a hybrid working arrangement based on project data classification and the opportunity to work with one of the UK's most adaptable and responsive engineering companies in the defence sector.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assist and liaise with project teams on mechanical aspects of products and systems.
  • Design bespoke equipment according to defence standards.
  • Select materials, manufacturing processes, and integration methods to suit equipment use.
  • Provide technical advice to suppliers and internal departments to ensure product fit and design intent.
  • Advise and conduct testing to demonstrate compliance with Defence and International Standards.
  • Assist Quality and Production to ensure products meet design intent from component to end product.
  • Support off-site problem-solving, troubleshooting, and integration/testing of products and systems as required.
  • Ensure all data and design decisions comply with best practices for traceability.
  • Adhere to all Health and Safety requirements and safe practices operated by Drumgrange.

What We’re Looking For:

  • Relevant Engineering Qualification at Level 6 NVQ or Honour’s Degree.
  • Level 3 qualification linked to Math and Science (Physics).
  • Proficient in English (written/spoken) to at least level B2 per CEFR.
  • Formal training on CAD software (Inventor preferred).
  • Previous engineering environment experience to understand fundamental principles.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • Competency in 3D design software (Inventor preferred but not essential).
  • Ability to work within a team on multiple projects simultaneously and deliver to challenging timescales.
  • Passion for practical problem-solving.
  • Practical mindset towards designing user interface functionality and external factors.
  • Self-motivated with ambitions to learn, seeking work practice improvements and championing emerging technologies and materials.
  • Awareness of common materials and manufacturing method selection considerations.

Security Clearance: Due to the nature of the role, you must gain UK government security clearance. You must hold British or dual nationality to achieve this.
