Job Description
Forward Deployed Engineer — Avatam Labs
Location: Remote
Type: 3-month contract to start (beta sprint) — with potential to convert to full-time Experience: 3–5 years
About Avatam Labs
We're building intelligent AI infrastructure for business operations — production-grade systems that run inside banks, financial institutions, legal firms, consulting firms, healthcare and other large organizations. We're a small, technical team solving hard problems at the intersection of AI, real-time systems, and multi-tenant cloud infrastructure. We move fast, ship incrementally, and own our entire stack — from inference orchestration to production infrastructure on AWS.
The Sprint
This engagement starts as a 3-month contract sprint for our beta — building and polishing the systems we'll be demoing to enterprise clients. You'll work directly with the founding team, ship fast, and see your work land in front of real decision-makers at real companies. Crush the sprint, and there's a clear path to a longer-term role as we scale into full deployments.
The Role
This is not a build-demos-and-hand-off job. As a Forward Deployed Engineer, you'll be embedded with enterprise customers as part of a dedicated FDE pod — working directly with internal teams at enterprises to build, deploy, and operate AI-powered systems tailored to their operational needs.
This is a hands-on role that combines deep technical work with customer collaboration and internal consulting. You'll write code, deploy infrastructure, debug production issues, translate business requirements into working software, and advise customer teams on how to leverage intelligent automation across their operations.
What you'll work on:
- Consult with enterprise internal teams (ops, IT, analytics, compliance) to identify automation opportunities
- Build backend services for event-driven automation, process automationd, workflow systems, and knowledge systems
- Develop operational interfaces, dashboards, and real-time interactive agentic AI for customer teams
- Design customer-specific integrations with existing databases, BI tools, and enterprise systems
- Deploy and configure systems across cloud, dedicated tenancy, and on-prem environments
- Debug production issues and optimize performance in live customer environments
- Implement security and compliance requirements for regulated industries (banking, healthcare)
What We're Looking For
Core Requirements:
- 3+ years building and deploying production applications
- Strong backend development — async programming, type safety, API design (Python/FastAPI, Pydantic, Zod preferred)
- Frontend development — modern JavaScript frameworks (React, Next.js or similar)
- Database expertise — SQL schema design, query optimization, migrations (Postgres preferred)
- Cloud and infrastructure — AWS or GCP, infrastructure-as-code (Terraform preferred)
- Consulting and communication — gather requirements from non-technical stakeholders, explain tradeoffs, build trust
- Operational mindset — debugging production issues, monitoring, incident response, on-call readiness
- Systems thinking — how enterprise IT works (auth, networking, compliance, data governance)
- Git and CI/CD — version control workflows, code review, automated testing

Technical Depth (comfortable with most of these):
- Backend: Pydantic, FastAPI routers/dependencies/middleware, SQL migrations, Postgres advanced features (JSON, full-text and vector search), Redis, background job processing, multi-tenant data isolation, protocol-based service design
- Frontend: Next.js App Router, TypeScript strict mode, Tailwind CSS, accessible component libraries, form handling and validation, modern data-fetching patterns, real-time streaming UX
- Infrastructure: Docker multi-stage builds, AWS (ECS Fargate, RDS, SQS, S3, Secrets Manager, ElastiCache), Terraform, GitHub Actions, observability and monitoring
Bonus Points:
- Experience with LLM APIs and agentic AI systems
- Vector databases and embedding-based search
- OAuth 2.0 / OIDC / SAML; real-time systems (WebSocket, SSE)
- Multi-tenant application patterns and row-level security
- Experience in regulated industries (banking/BFSI, healthcare, government)
- Security compliance frameworks (SOC 2, ISO 27001, data residency)
- Prior consulting or customer-facing engineering experience
What Success Looks Like
- Month 1: Onboard, deploy to staging, ship code to production, learn our deployment and incident-response procedures
- Month 2: Own features end-to-end (backend + frontend + infra), contribute directly to the client demo build
- Month 3: Deliver polished, demo-ready systems for the beta — and set yourself up for what comes next
