Job Purpose

A defense technology company in Abu Dhabi is seeking a Senior Software Engineer to join its advanced engineering team. This role is ideal for a highly hands-on software developer with strong expertise in Android platform development, embedded systems, and secure mobile technologies.

The successful candidate will have a solid understanding of Android internals, embedded Linux, platform software development, applied cryptography, and cybersecurity, with the ability to develop secure software for mission-critical mobile communication systems. This is not an application development role. Instead, the focus is on developing secure mobile platforms, operating system components, and low-level software that powers next-generation communication devices.

Working closely with multidisciplinary engineering teams, you will contribute to the design, development, and delivery of secure mobile platforms while driving technical excellence and software quality.

Key Responsibilities

• Design, develop, and maintain secure Android platform software for mission-critical mobile communication devices.
• Develop hands-on software across Android, Embedded Linux, and platform-level components, contributing throughout the full software development lifecycle.
• Build and enhance platform software and operating system capabilities rather than end-user mobile applications.
• Develop software for embedded systems, ensuring high levels of performance, reliability, and security across mobile devices.
• Apply applied cryptography and secure software development principles to protect sensitive communications and data.
• Integrate cybersecurity best practices into software design, development, and implementation.

• Contribute to the Android Framework, Linux Kernel, device drivers, middleware, and other system-level components where required.
• Develop across both front-end and back-end components where required, with a strong focus on platform engineering rather than application development.
• Collaborate with hardware, systems, product, and test engineering teams to deliver secure, integrated solutions.
• Support software architecture, code reviews, debugging, performance optimisation, and system integration activities.
• Participate in technical planning, problem solving, and continuous improvement while driving engineering best practices.
• Mentor junior engineers and contribute to a collaborative, high-performing engineering environment while remaining hands-on in software development.

Required Qualifications & Experience:

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related field.
• 8-10+ years of professional software development experience.
• Strong hands-on development experience with Android platform development, embedded software, and Linux-based systems.
• Solid understanding of Android fundamentals, including the Android framework and platform architecture.
• Experience developing software for mobile devices, with emphasis on platform and operating system components rather than mobile applications.
• Experience working with embedded Linux, Linux Kernel concepts, or other low-level operating system components.
• Strong understanding of applied cryptography, including secure implementation of cryptographic technologies.
• Good understanding of cybersecurity principles and secure software development practices.
• Experience developing software across both front-end and back-end components where required (full-stack development), while maintaining a strong systems and platform focus.
