Job Description

Overview

A fast-growing, seed-stage data infrastructure startup is hiring a Full-Stack Software Engineer to help build the core backend systems powering modern software for the construction industry.

This company is building the infrastructure layer that connects fragmented legacy construction systems with modern financial and operational workflows. The product already serves 550+ paying customers on 1–3 year contracts, is profitable and cash-flow positive, and is growing quickly with a small, high-caliber engineering team.

This is a highly backend-heavy role, roughly 80–90% backend, ideal for an engineer who loves simplifying complex systems, working close to the customer, and owning meaningful product work end-to-end. The team ships quickly, works directly from customer feedback, and is looking for someone who can thrive in an intense, high-ownership, low-ego environment.

This is best suited for someone who wants to work on hard infrastructure problems, including real-time data sync, legacy system integrations, reliable APIs, testing frameworks, and scalable backend architecture.

Location: San Francisco, CA

Work Type: In-person, 5 days/week

Employment Type: Full-time

Experience: 1–5 years

Compensation: $130,000–$240,000

Visa Sponsorship: H-1B, O-1, OPT

Responsibilities

In this role, you will:

  • Build and maintain a unified API layer that connects construction ERPs and legacy systems to modern software platforms.
  • Work with complex legacy systems, including SQL-based, DLL-based, and API-based systems that may be 20–40 years old.
  • Build core backend infrastructure for products across ERP sync, AP automation, expense management, and vendor management.
  • Solve real-time data synchronization challenges, including websocket implementations for systems without native webhooks.
  • Help scale systems handling millions of API requests per day.
  • Build reliable APIs on top of fragmented legacy systems with strong uptime, SLA, and reliability expectations.
  • Create scalable testing frameworks to catch edge cases across 1,000+ endpoints.
  • Own features end-to-end as an individual contributor in a flat engineering team.
  • Work directly with customers to understand pain points and ship product improvements based on real feedback.
  • Contribute across backend and full-stack work, including frontend development for internal/customer-facing apps that dog-food the company’s own API.

Qualifications

Strong candidates will have:

  • 1–5 years of backend or full-stack engineering experience.
  • Strong backend engineering ability, with comfort working on infrastructure, APIs, data sync, and distributed systems.
  • A computer science degree from a strong engineering program.
  • Familiarity with cloud infrastructure, ideally AWS.
  • Startup or founding engineering experience, especially at a pre-seed through Series C company.
  • Experience working in ambiguous, fast-moving environments where engineers own problems deeply.
  • A high-ownership, low-ego working style.
  • Strong academic background, such as a high GPA, academic honors, debate, or competitive extracurriculars.
  • Multi-year tenure in a prior role, showing follow-through and depth.
  • A serious competitive background, such as college or high school athletics, is a strong plus.
  • Top engineering school background is a plus, especially schools like UWaterloo or other top CS programs.

This is especially strong for candidates who have shipped real products, enjoy backend-heavy work, and want to be close to customers and product decisions.

This is probably not the right fit for candidates who are:

  • Looking for a mostly frontend, mobile, embedded, crypto, LLM, or trendy tech-focused role.
  • Coming from only big tech without startup experience, unless they have less than 2 years of big-tech-only experience.
  • Currently prioritizing work-life balance over intensity and ownership.
  • Primarily interested in construction tech domain experience rather than core backend engineering.
  • Currently in between roles due to performance-related reasons.
  • Looking for a new grad role.

Benefits

The company offers:

  • 90% healthcare cost coverage with multiple plan options.
  • 100% 401(k) match up to 4% of annual salary.
  • Sizable relocation bonus for candidates outside the Bay Area.
  • On-site gym with Peloton, squat rack, Tempo, and yoga setup.
  • Opportunity to join a profitable, fast-growing seed-stage startup backed by top investors.
  • Direct exposure to customers, product strategy, and core infrastructure decisions.
  • High-impact engineering ownership on systems used by hundreds of paying customers.
  • Visa Sponsorship only H-1B, O-1, OPT available
