Job Description

Technical Product Manager / Product Engineer — Early-Stage AI Startup

Location: San Francisco, CA

Work style: In office Monday–Thursday, remote Friday

Compensation: $150K–$230K base + meaningful equity

Visa: Sponsorship / transfer support available for qualified candidates

Our client is an early-stage AI startup building an agentic platform for complex enterprise software implementations. The product helps project teams capture knowledge, automate repetitive workflows, surface risks, and deploy AI agents across large-scale ERP and back-office transformation projects.

This is a high-ownership role for someone who sits at the intersection of product, engineering, and customer discovery. The ideal person has a software engineering background but is excited to spend a meaningful amount of time understanding customer workflows, shaping product direction, writing specs, prototyping, and translating messy enterprise problems into buildable product.

What you’ll do

  • Own product discovery for complex enterprise workflows, including speaking with users, mapping pain points, and identifying high-leverage automation opportunities
  • Translate ambiguous customer problems into clear product requirements, technical specs, workflows, and implementation plans
  • Partner closely with engineering to design and ship AI-native product features across LLM workflows, data pipelines, integrations, and agentic automation
  • Build lightweight prototypes, internal tools, demos, or technical proof-of-concepts when needed
  • Work directly with consultants, operators, and enterprise users to understand how software implementations actually happen in the field
  • Prioritize product surfaces based on customer impact, technical feasibility, and company strategy
  • Help define how AI agents should be deployed into real enterprise workflows, not just demo environments
  • Own outcomes after launch, including adoption, workflow efficiency, customer feedback, and iteration

What we’re looking for

  • 0–5 years of experience across software engineering, product engineering, technical product management, founder/CTO work, or similar
  • Strong software engineering foundation; you do not need to be the deepest backend engineer, but you should be able to reason clearly about architecture, tradeoffs, APIs, data models, and system design
  • Experience building or shipping real products to users, whether through startups, internships, side projects, or founder experience
  • Ability to work across product and engineering: write clear specs, talk to customers, understand technical constraints, and drive execution
  • Strong interest in AI-native products, LLM-powered workflows, agentic systems, retrieval, automation, and enterprise software
  • Clear signs of ambition and ownership: founder background, high-quality side projects, hackathons, early-stage startup experience, or independently owned product work
  • Comfort with ambiguity, fast iteration, and high ownership in a small startup environment

Technical background

Strong candidates may have experience with some of the following:

  • TypeScript / JavaScript
  • React / Next.js
  • Python / FastAPI
  • SQL / PostgreSQL
  • APIs, integrations, data pipelines, or workflow automation
  • LLMs, RAG, embeddings, tool calling, agents, LangGraph / LangChain, structured outputs, or document extraction
  • Cloud infrastructure, Docker, Kubernetes, AWS, Redis, Temporal, or similar systems

Product background

Strong candidates should be able to show examples of:

  • Talking to users or customers and turning feedback into product decisions
  • Writing product specs, PRDs, technical design docs, or implementation plans
  • Owning a product surface from concept through launch
  • Prioritizing between multiple ambiguous problems
  • Building products for B2B, enterprise, fintech, ERP, procurement, accounting, back-office, or workflow-heavy users
  • Using metrics, customer feedback, or business impact to evaluate whether something worked

Best-fit profiles

  • Former founder / CTO of a small technical startup
  • Product-minded software engineer who wants to move closer to product
  • Technical PM with a real engineering background
  • Early startup engineer who has owned customer-facing product surfaces
  • Forward-deployed engineer who wants to be more product-oriented, as long as they have built software from scratch
  • New grad from a strong CS program with serious side projects and clear product instincts

Lower priority profiles

  • Pure PMs without hands-on technical depth
  • Solutions engineers or implementation consultants who mostly configure existing systems
  • Engineers who only want heads-down coding with no customer or product exposure
  • ML research-only candidates with no product shipping experience
  • Candidates who need a highly structured environment
  • Candidates with no clear evidence of ownership, ambition, or independent building

Why this is exciting

This is a chance to join a small, talent-dense team building AI into one of the most complex and expensive areas of enterprise software. The product is used in live, high-stakes customer environments, so the feedback loop is direct and the impact of strong product judgment is immediate. You will have real ownership early, work closely with technical founders, and help define how AI agents are applied to large-scale enterprise workflows.
