Food Science at AUT

Food Science is a key discipline within our multidisciplinary School of Science, offering opportunities to contribute to innovative teaching and impactful research. Students can pursue advanced study through programmes such as the Master of Science (Food Science), working alongside internationally recognised, research-active staff. The discipline is further strengthened by the Centre of Future Foods and Health, which drives research and innovation. Emphasis is placed on practical skills, small class sizes, and preparing graduates to meet the evolving needs of the science workforce.

The School of Science brings together expertise across environmental and marine science, biological and biomedical sciences, medical diagnostics, psychology and neuroscience, chemistry, and food science. We embrace practice-led, research-informed approaches to teaching. Your contributions to programme and course development will support our continuous-improvement focus. You will teach across programmes as assigned by the Head of Department and be comfortable using digital resources to enhance learning. You will publish actively in your specialised fields. It is also expected that over time the successful candidate will seek and attract external research funding, engage with government, business, professional bodies and the community, and contribute to School/Faculty activities.

About you | Ko wai koe

As an academic member of staff at AUT, you’ll blend teaching, research and engagement to create outcomes that have real impact on the world. You’ll work closely with students, collaborate across disciplines and contribute to projects alongside our industry and community partners. With room to experiment, develop your skills and refine your practice, you’ll be supported to make a practical, impactful contribution to both learning and discovery.

You will bring an open, engaging, and collaborative approach, with the flexibility to respond to changing requirements, and actively contribute to a positive and collegial environment. You will demonstrate cultural humility, awareness, and respect when engaging with indigenous peoples and culturally diverse communities. Experience supporting indigenous, equity, or inclusion focused initiatives is highly desirable.

The Selection Criteria Sought Are

• Qualifications:
• A completed PhD in Food Science (or a related field).
• Bachelor’s degree in Food Science, Food Technology, Food Engineering, Chemical Engineering, or similar field
• Teaching:
• An early career academic will ideally have at least some previous teaching assistant experience. (Lecturer)
• More experienced candidates will have previous lecturing experience, evidence of curriculum development and preferably experience supervising Master's and/or PhD students. (Senior Lecturer)
• Research:
• An early career academic will have the basis of a solid research pipeline and a job market paper available. (Lecturer)
• More experienced candidates will already have a more established research programme and a proven research track record with quality publications and ideally also success in external funding bids. (Senior Lecturer)
• Evidence of proactively pursuing external research income is desirable. (Lecturer)
• Evidence of securing or contributing to external research income is desirable. (Senior Lecturer)
